Gospel music changed my life when I heard Helen Baylor sing "Look a Little Closer" for the first time. I was 12 years old, and it was playing on the radio at a time when I needed hope more than ever. I started listening to and singing along with many gospel artists: Tramaine Hawkins, LaShun Pace, Kirk Franklin. This really influenced me vocally and stylistically.
Later (around 19), I discovered the guitar - I inhereted my father's. He was an excellent guitarist, actually, and everyone knew him for that. So, as I started messing around on his guitar, I immediately started writing songs. This came quite naturally - actually, everyone in my family writes songs and sings and plays - we're quite musical. So, I wrote songs - most not that memorable - however, every now and then a jewel came out of the rubble (this remains true today - haha - listen...).
Even after this, I realized that I could sing... like really sing! I was in my mid-twenties around this time. People know me best for my soulful singing now, and not so much for the stuff with guitar. I'm not always sure which direction in music I want to pursue, but I think that will come to me as time goes on.
