Indie rock underground giants The Rileys are the epitome of the modern day D.I.Y. band and are living proof that going it alone can have many benefits.
So far, 2009 has been a great year for The Rileys, selling out both The Islington Academy and Camden Barfly, going on their first UK tour and receiving airplay on stations around the country with their second single “Do You Feel Me?†which reached number 7 in the Amazon mp3 rock chart. This success has earned them a headline gig at The O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, which will take place on October 28th. Their third single “Victory Cigar†will be released on July 12th.
Since they formed in the summer of 2007, The Rileys stunning live performances have been captivating audiences in and around London, leading to a sell-out first major headline gig at Bush Hall at the end of August. Their debut self-titled EP (featuring XFM Uploaded single of the week "Jimmy Is A Lunatic"), released in January '08 has sold over 1000 copies to date and their first single Baby Blue was released in June last year. This powerful ode to miseducated youth (described in one review as a 'grand effort' which 'hits every target') received airplay on the BBC Radio Network, as well as local radio stations up and down the country.
The songwriting power behind The Rileys unique sound comes from Joseph Fielder (23, vox) and Dave Giles (24, guitar), who met at their school induction day in 1996 and have been writing music pretty much ever since. The two Essex boys moved to West London to form The Rileys after both finishing University, and were joined by bassist James Field (19) and drummer Martin Griffith (24).
This summer will see the boys carrying on where they left off last year with their Living Room tour. The band arrange a small number of exclusive gigs at fans houses with just an acoustic guitar, a bucket full of songs and the promise of a good time. They also plan to build on the success of their first festival season which saw them put in notable performances at The Offset Festival (Essex) and The B Fest (Cumbria), by playing at Guilfest in July.
The success of their first ever tour has set the tone for what promises to be a big year for The Rileys: As Britain slumps into a recession, The Rileys aim to get the nation dancing.
