5 Minus X, originally the Five Minus X Trio, started at a Something Beautiful show at the Nite Cap lounge in late 2006 on Chicago's north side. A support act was needed for an upcoming SoB show and no bands were to be found. Grasping at the opportunity, Auggie asked Jon if he wanted to help out SoB by forming up a quick support act. Not sure that a drum and bass act would do well Auggie and Jon asked Rich to join up to play as the support act. Rich was unsure, but after some reassurance from the rest of the players, it was decided that rehearsals would commence. 5 Minus X played their first show with SoB with much fanfare... well there were like 13 people at the bar. A good time was had by all and everyone thought that this would be the end of the band... this was not to be. Rich and the guys decided to keep going and officially established the band as a permanent project.
With Rich's education in music composition and the influences of modern punk and hardcore bands, Jon's roots in ska and 70s British punk, and Auggie's metal, classic rock, and Latin drumming, 5 Minus X has a unique sound of hooky pop punk riffs, deep lyrics, and the occasional musical twist. 5 Minus X cut their first demo recordings as a band in late June of 2007 and since being signed to Buncha Losers, a small Chicago label, 5 Minus X has plans for a full length album sometime in the next year.
