As a child, I remember being asked this question by teachers everytime they wanted us to share things about ourselves with the other students and I never really had an answer. I just didn't believe a normal human everyday person could be a "Hero". Now that I'm older, I have definetely changed my mind and have an answer to that question...
My Father, my beloved dad, is the most amazing Hero I will ever know of. He was so strong for our family all growing up, as we struggled major financial catastrophies, hardships, family losses, etc. This was a man who went to college for 8 years, 2 different major Universities, to obtain his Bachelor degree in English, his Masters in Education and his Bachlors in Law. He never once gave less than 110% for our family or himself. After a layoff from a college where he Managed and taught their GED program for 10 years, he began working 3 jobs, barely getting any sleep each day for about 8 years, just to keep our family of four fed and happy in our nice home. He struggled with a divorce to my mother and the loss of living with my sister and I. Then, one day in June of 2001, he passed out on a highway driving about 65 mph, veering off to a ditch. We later found out he had a brain tumor that made him black-out and this growth was due to a genetic Bone/Blood Cancer he unknowingly had for a long time, called Multiple Myeloma. His life was now changed forever...
I watched my father struggle through the most pain I think a human can endure from that point on. His entire body was 75% coveraged with the Bone Cancer. He became so weak. He began losing his well-known quick wits and fast train of intelligent thought. He could no longer go on long hikes or take a drive, because he'd get so exhausted and needed his medications around the clock. The only thing my father didn't lose was his sense of humor. Humor was the biggest and best form of human nature, in my dad's eyes. I attribute my great outlook on life to him because of it. He was an amazing man that I will forever be grateful to have known.
My father finally passed away in February 2004.
This small glimpse at his life is dedicated to him; my dad, my hero.
