Village: are a small community of people or group of residents in an urban area smaller than a town. Vertical Village was once the informal name of the Tenderloin District, a name celebrating the neighborhood's ethnic diversity and dense population of families & children.
Who we are: Vertical Village is a 501(c)3 non-profit in San Francisco's Tenderloin District. We seek to build & strengthen community in a socially marginalized neighborhood. We believe that all people benefit from a sense of community, but especially the disenfranchised. Vertical Village works to provide creative, consistent community space to enrich the lives of Tenderloin Residents.
What makes a great cafe/community center? Of course great food, coffee, cool mural inside & out, maybe some local art & music, a few poetry slams . But what's most important is the spirit behind it. Yes, we start with a sturdy foundation of being a focused, dedicated not for profit that for a better Tenderloin, but within the compounds of that structure we seek to forget about formula. We seek not only to serve organic, but be organic. Throwing out program based thinking, we desire to be hard working and open. With the myriad of talents, skills, professional backgrounds &compassion driven people, we are excited to see what will grow from this project.
As of now we are a small band of fun-loving social entrepreneurs. We bring innovative ideas with background expertise in almost every sector arts, community capacity building, urban gardening and sustainability, micro-finance, and gourmet cooking.
