Frank Moon

About Me

Frank Moon trained in composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire, and shortly after graduating with a first class Bmus in 2000 (winning the Bmus prize, the composition prize and the Bill Warman award for composition) began teaching composition and performance studies at Coventry University. This led to a full lecturing post as he became the youngest full time lecturer on the staff, teaching subjects ranging from 20th century history & contextual studies, analysis, performance studies, composition, jazz and improvisation. Alongside this Frank had time to score and MD four Shakespearean theatre commissions and several productions for contemporary dance, in addition to performing regularly with many varied ensembles.Frank now works full time as a freelance musician. An accomplished and much in demand instrumentalist, he is currently confining himself to guitar, oud, electric bass, cittern, percussion, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele. His passion and in-depth knowledge of music from around the world have led him to work with a huge variety of ensembles, and tour in the UK, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Holland and Poland. Equally at home in folk music, jazz, gypsy jazz, Balkan gypsy punk, Arabic, African and Indian fusion, Cuban son and salsa, hip hop, free improvisation, art noise, experimental multimedia performance art and accompanying singer songwriters or mediaeval choirs, Frank has a relentless appetite for good music in any style. Some favourite highlights of the past few years include touring the USA with Mediaeval Baebes, two Glastonbury festivals with The Destroyers, Cheltenham Jazz Festival with Steve Tromans’ Howl Band and Sid Peacock’s Surge, WOMAD festival with Se Tin Saba, the Steve Reich festival in Lyon and an Ikon Gallery installation with experimental gamelan group The Loop Orchestra, Shambala festival with The Bright Size Gypsies and the Frank Moon Desert Groove Band, composing for Cornish theatre companies Zenith and Cube, a UK tour with African funk band Jaantabi, playing live on Radio 1 with hip hop band The Substance Orchestra, and playing in a small vodka bar in Poland with Bev Lee Harling.
