About Me
Final Evolution are a four piece Alternative Rock band based in Taunton/Bridgwater, Somerset.
In early 2003, three friends came together to learn some of their favourite songs and play music together back when playing music was just purely for fun. Tom Langdon, and Dan Webber got together with Craig Webber to play cover versions of their favourite songs. Feeling that something was lacking, Ben Gilholm was asked to come in and play second guitar.
After a couple of months of practising and having fun, a local gig booker heard the music while passing by and invited them to play at a local venue. At first, the foursome jumped at the opportunity and began working on a set, but soon realised they were not up to the task - having just recently formed - and decided to pull out. From here on, they needed to work on their musicality, and, more importantly, get a singer.
Over the following year and a half they played a couple of shadowesque gigs
without a vocalist, using the lead guitar to play the vocal melody. They started auditioning vocalists, but couldn’t find anyone that would fit into the band. Feeling that the music the band were playing and the lyrics that Ben was writing needed a masculine voice, they turned away the few female vocalists that came by to try out. Eventually, frustration kicked in and a band meeting resulted in Ben and Tom heading off to singing lessons. Tom - deciding that singing lessons wasn’t for him - soon stopped.
Next up for the band was to record a demo, to help get our music out there,
so, late 2004 they stepped into Kewsound Studios in Kewstoke nr Weston Super Mare. They recorded 5 tracks of their own music in a very short space of time, and were the subject of a documentary for a friend’s college coursework entitled ’Final Evolution: The Rockumentary’
Only a year into his singing lessons, more and more gig opportunities were arising. Another band meeting led to the conclusion that singing lessons was too ’long-term’ a solution, they needed something now. Thats when Craig decided to pipe up and tell everyone about a friend of his called Karl Ficarotta. Karl, it turned out, had a set of pipes on him, and sang Ben’s lyrics as if they were his own. And Karl himself realised that Final Evolution were playing the type of music that he wanted to be singing.
During the early months of 2006, the stress of constant travelling and many disappointing shows began to grind at Ben, and feeling that Final Evolution was just not fun anymore, he started writing and recording material for his own band. In August, whilst on holiday in Spain Ben recieved a phone call, telling him that Tom was no longer in the band. Another meeting took place when he got back in the country, and it was decided that despite the feeling that everything was starting to crumble around them, Final Evolution would continue, and all other projects should be put on hold.
Next step would be to get a bassist, but after more failed auditions, it was decided to start playing acoustically so they could get back into playing live after so many months out of action. Quite a few shows followed, consisting of new songs - written during the darkest time - and songs taken from Ben’s solo effort, as well as acoustic versions of old tracks.
It seemed natural for the band to head back into the studio and record some of the new songs they had been writting. This time they spent a week in Beehive Studios and came out with a four song cd featuring more diversity than the last one. The songs included more keyboard and piano, and more passion in the vocal performance.
Again, the band started to get bored of playing the same way show after show, so the lineup chopped and changed to try out new ways of playing. One show consisted of Karl playing acoustic guitar, Ben playing lead, and Dan on bass. Currently though, they have recruited the keyboard talent of Lee Windle, to cover melodies and soundscapes, and hopefully give the band back its ’electric’ sound.
