The Academy of the South Side

About Me

Founded in 2005, The Academy of the South Side provides year-round affordable, high quality instruction in painting and drawing through classes, workshops, open model sessions and artist residencies for students of all ages and skill levels. Housed in a beautiful studio on the 3rd floor of the historic Brew House Association building, The Academy aims to not only educate but to inspire. Beginners and professionals alike develop and hone their skills through single classes or more concentrated study, building on a foundation of studio practice focusing and drawing the human form from life.
The Academy of the South Side also provides unique opportunities to expand beyond portraiture and figure study, offering long pose classes of costumed models, adding character and flair to produce a more complete painting. To supplement the studio curriculum, The Academy will continue to host workshops and residencies of nationally-acclaimed artists such as our friend Sean Cheetham, bringing world class skills and experience to Pittsburgh. Students also will have opportunities to connect with the greater artistic community through our activities, as well as exhibition opportunities at the Brew House and local galleries.
The mission of the Brew House Association is to encourage community participation and create educational opportunities in the creative arts. Through its exhibition, performance, education and artist residency initiatives, the Brew House is determined to aid, promote, and support the arts, artists, and the community.
