Super Atomic began in the late summer of 2007 as an idea to fuse outrageous comedy with musical entertainment. Founding members Colton Hensley and Corey Checho aimed to present a show that brought inspiration and excitement to a distinguished group of kids that didn’t fit the molds of society.
Hensly and Checho quickly set to put their plan into action and recruited members David Burk, Tony Bucelato, and Josh Pettinger to fill out the group’s rhythm section.
Originally known as “The Drugstore Cowboys†the band wrote and recorded their first song Like a Sheep in Josh’s project studio during their first practice. Combining elements of punk and ska music with the satirical fantasies of a fictional child molester, the band was able to quickly achieve a quick reputation for dark comedy.
Realizing the sudden popularity of the song, keyboardist Josh Pettinger aimed to capitalize on the group’s success and replaced Colton Hensley as lead vocalist for the group. Colton continued on with the band playing extraneous instruments and participating in backing vocals in recordings as well as in live performances.
The band acquired members Zach Burnett and Mike Maier after Tony left the United States to live in Europe for the year. Stringing together a list of crude songs and unfinished musical ideas the group set to play shows and spread their music.
Throughout the next year the band played shows anywhere they could and for anyone who would listen, usually acquiring gigs with fellow bands and friends. The group was able to play at multiple school functions, music venues, youth centers, bars, and living rooms in and around the Rochester area. Sharing the stage with such acts as The Fad, Ceremonial Snips, The Noise on Vinyl, The Gammas, Kulturkamf, The Hounds of Hell, KTV, The Wheezing Stumblers, and The Grievants, the group was able to develop a stage presence that shocked and enticed audiences.
Off the stage, the band also began to develop musically utilizing elements of soul, funk, blues, swing, rock ‘n’ roll, psychedelic, punk, pop, metal, and even carnival music in creating their album. Progressing the comedic nature of the group’s lyrics, now front-man Josh Pettinger began to intertwine ideas of loss, love, friendship, pain, and frustration into the mix, often switching from “serious†to “satirical†at the drop of a hat.
Between writing, performing, working, and going to school the members of Super Atomic recorded their debut album at Josh’s home, which was finally completed in August of 2008. The Local Show hosted by DJ Sloan Kristy (on Rochester station WBER) has played songs such as Like a Sheep and All for Love for its audiences on Sunday evenings since the spring of 2008.
Thus far the album Satan’s Nursery has met small-scale success as the band continues to promote the new release to different markets. Currently the band has their second album underway, writing and recording songs in various styles and genres. The new album looks to be released sometime in the summer of 2009 continuing with a tradition of “satire and insightâ€, with a new twist of artistic appeal.
It is certain that the development of this band is still in its infant stages and will continue to bring passion and excitement to those who care to listen.
