(Sometimes I'm a preachy bastard) We think of ourselves as more advanced, more intelligent than the civilizations of old. Yet our births exceed deaths by about three people per second. Each year there are 90 million more of us. The burgeoning human population is the greatest problem we face today. We cannot expect science to solve the problem for us. Most decisions and actions fall OUTSIDE pure science into the realms of values, ethics, morality, and philosophy. The solution resides in education and action. Every human being is obligated to become informed and make educated decisions on issues the affect Earth. We must act in rational ways. Select well designed, long lasting, and recyclable products made by responsible companies with minimal impact on the environment, and encourage others to do so. Even at gunpoint (just kidding?) Present trade-offs between financial and ecological considerations are often tilted towards immediate gain, short term profit, IMMEDIATE CONVENIENCE. We must educate against such destructive behaviors. We are a part of this world, never its master as we will be reminded time and time again. Preserve open space. Control populations. Steady-state economies instead of those that must grow to stay alive. Our cities are crowded, and our tempers are short. Are you part of the problem? Blah blah blah.
