About Me

Hi there - thanks for dropping by.
My name is Jay Dickson and I'm a professional drummer. I'm fortunate to be an endorsee of Mapex drums and Aquarian drum heads and I would really encourage people, from novices to jaded old pros, to check out their lines - they build some stunning drums!!
Primarily I'm best known for rock drumming, nothing unusual there for a 22 year old, but I work in a wide range of styles - excerpts of which I'll be sharing with you all via this myspace page in the coming weeks.
On this page you can see footage of my performance with The Mascara Story at the Download Festival and below that there is a short clip of me working out in my rehearsal space / tuition studio.
In addition to solid live work I also love working on new studio projects which present me with challenges beyond conventional 4/4. I give regular one to one weekly drumming lessons to a select cadre of pupils ranging in ages and abilities.
I'm always available for consultation, advice, tuition and recording / session work. I don't bite, I wash regularly, I'm not cost prohibitive and I travel / relocate well - so don't be afraid to ask or contact me in relation to anything you think I may be interested in contributing to musically.
In the next few weeks I'll be uploading more video lessons and footage from the drum clinic which I did with Pete Riley (Rhythm Magazine / Keith Emerson, Guthrie Govan etc) so please feel free to add this page to your favourites and drop by regularly. You're all welcome to exchange views / comments and if you've a question about developing particular techniques or styles I'll genuinely try to answer any questions you might have.
''drums are life''.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: http://www.mapex.co.uk
Band Members: I have been lucky enough to work with various pleasant and skilled folks, some of those super people you can find below.
Influences: Moby, SiKth, Reuben, Oldskool, Deftones, Abject poverty, The Used, Chicken fillet burgers, Blink 182, Carlsberg, Meshuggah, Aphex Twin, Benny Greb, Foo Fighters, Subway, Dad, 36 Crazyfists, Necrophagist, Thomas Lang, True friends, Alan Partridge, Vinnie Colaiuta, Drawn Together, Marco Minnemann, Late nights, Extreme Dodgeball, Dillinger Escape Plan, Aqua Teen Hungar Force.....etc etc
Sounds Like: I've no particular "sound like" that springs to mind - due to the fact that I've so many varied influences. I dig everything from the hard hitting of Travis Barker to the groove meistery of Horacio Hernandez (el Negro). Life's too short to be typecast so I try to vary my outputs on a regular basis - hence my love of interacting with musicians of various styles. If you think I play / sound like someone in particular it's more than likely due to the fact that I study so many styles by so many players that something will invariably "stick". Me? I'm just playing what "sounds" sensible to me.Research, rehearse, research, rehearse - knowledge is key and drums are life.
