fiction: to kill a mockingbird, harry potter (especially prisoner of azkaban, order of the phoenix), chronicles of narnia, the secret life of bees, divine secrets of the ya-ya sisterhood, the fountainhead, the tao of pooh, hemingway in small doses, a wrinkle in time (etc.), anything by shakespeare (*especially* hamlet) / nonfiction: bird by bird and operating instructions (and any other nonfiction anne lamott ever writes), what we carry, i'm a stranger here myself, the feminine mystique, hypocrite in a pouffy white dress, the bible's song of solomon, anything by c.s. lewis (especially the four loves, mere christianity), the things they carried, all the president's men, and pretty much any memoir written with a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor / periodicals: sf chronicle (jon carroll, mark morford), washington post, entertainment weekly (stephen king)

people who live with purpose, with awareness, with gratitude, with joy.
