And just like that, through the miracle of television, the hotel owner was suddenly able to triple his prices. Since everyone watching TV at home had enough space on EITHER side to grow a tree. As such, students were no longer able to use the bathroom unless it was an emergency. None of mine ever had to go during the night but one kid apparently had a smaller bladder, which justified the unilateral price increase.
Mustafio had woken up from his piano because I heard music as I approached the door. Mustafio was a skinny old man, with hunched shoulders, and walked in a shuffling manner, his stoop low with limbs pulled in close to his body.
"Might I suggest, sir," I said, "that you get hold of a very old book of lessons, one that has a slightly newer twist?" Mustafio replied, "I have a number of pianos here. Each one worth easily a quarter million."
Then Mustafio insisted on opening the lids of the pianos to demonstrate that they were not built with wires in uniform spaces, but grouped rather more closely, in heaps, in a manner of speaking. Mustafio wheezed while explaining that each wire, if struck alone, is tuned precisely, but it costs him a fortune to have the piano tuner come by each week. But since the heaps of wires are positioned somewhat away from each other, the sympathetic vibrations of one wire will generate contra distinct secondary vibrations to its playmates in the group.
His roof, though, had been undergoing dry rot for a number of years. I told Mustafio that he ought to have been maintaining his house rather than ignoring it. As such, I was careful where I placed my feet, concerned that I would fall on top of his brother, a transit security officer, who was sleeping in the room under me.
"I'm only going to say this one more time," I told Mustafio. "Relax. I'm your friend, and I care about you, and there isn't a thing in the world that I wouldn't do for you, sir."
