THE best before: STORY
We are best before:, disco-obsessed party gibbons from Bristol, England. For the last four and a half years we've been running parties in clubs, bars and pubs all over the city (and beyond), playing great records and bringing top guests to the West. It all started at Timbuk2 in 2003 (we were the first promoters to use the space for club nights), when we were inspired by attending a series of great basement parties up North to put on our own bashes. After 18 months there - and guests including The Unabombers, Chris Duckenfield, Greg Wilson, Jimpster, Brooks, Kelvin Andrews and Elliot Eastwick - we had a break. We returned in 2007 with a regular "boogie in a boozer" in our fave pub, The Bank. Since then we've been back to Timbuk2 and collaborated with loads of other Bristol nights including UFO, Groove On, Just jack, Futureboogie, Freejive, TAPE, Switch and BYTE. Recent guests have included Chateau Flight, Hercules & Love Affair, Rune Lindbaek, The Tirk DJs and a variety of friends from around the country. We've also guested at parties around the UK, including Cocoon at the Rainbow Warehouse in Birmingham and 2 Black Rabbits at Dulo in Sheffield. R
The best before family consists of resident DJs/promoters Sell By Dave, Legendary Tone, Puffin Jack, Richard Carnage and The Kelly Twins, plus a network of mates, DJ friends and nice people who like dancing in a boozer/basement after several pints of cider. Come and join us at one of our events - we guarantee you'll have a fantastic time!
The best before: DJs
SELL BY DAVE
The founder of best before: and formerly self-proclaimed "chief cellar dweller". Sell By is as happy playing obscure acid house and disco as he is reggae, funk, random rock, Italo, techno and all things Balearic. One half of Bristol DJ/production duo Thumbs Aloft. Obsessed with beards for some unknown reason.
LEGENDARY TONE
Loveable Legendary Tone cut his teeth DJing in Leicester and Nottingham throughout the 90s, and has proved a massive hit since his move to Bristol in the summer of 2007. Tone is a fearless record collector and regularly astounds best before: regulars with his weird and wonderful selections. To say his record box is "eclectic" is putting it mildly.
PUFFIN JACK
When not trying to change the world with the socialist party, former model Puffin is one of Bristol's best-loved DJs. Brilliant at party sets, Puffin has a massive knowledge of dance music thanks to his days behind the counter at various West Country record shops. Disco, punk-funk, dub techno, dubstep, minimal, acid house, soundtracks, jungle, hardcore… you name it, he'll play it. Blindingly well. Runs the TAPE blog and nights with pal Rich Carnage, and Normalise with Luke Malcher and Harry Glazebrook.
RICHARD CARNAGE
Youngster Rich is the driving force behind the highly-acclaimed TAPE blog, where he regularly waxes lyrical about obscure techno, dubstep, tech-house and nu-disco records. Along with sometime DJ partner in crime Puffin Jack, Rich has a reputation within Bristol as a fast-rising talent who's equally adept at warming up, rocking the party or smashing up an after-hours. Tries regularly to grow a beard but can't, the fresh-faced dancefloor nerd.
THE KELLY TWINS
The Kelly Twins are an integral part of the best before: crew. Famed for their love of classic electro/electrofunk and wonky techno, the identical twins are quickly getting a deserved reputation as brilliant DJs. Technically superb with a take on dance music that differs from anyone else in Bristol - or their hometown Plymouth, for that matter. Check out their UFO night when it returns soon.
ANDY CLARKSON
A regular at Bristol's reggae clubs, Andy Clarkson is one of the most knowledgeable and open-minded DJs you'll ever meet. With his self-proclaimed "tramp hair" and pint of Guinness, Andy can regularly be found behind the decks at the Bank. When not playing reggae and ska, Andy likes to spin everything from punk-funk, new wave and disco to psyeche rock and 60s garage.
