"Rocket, Rocket…" The now infamous opening lines to the Dead Or Alive, 1985 smash, “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record). The song that was to be the start of long lasting love affair with pop music for Danish song writer and record producer, Steen Ulrich.
Influenced greatly from a diverse entity of composers, everyone from the likes of Stock Aitken Waterman, to John Williams right up to Mozart, Steen began to play live sets in various local bands. However, despite having a deep routed affection for live music, he started to become more aware and thus interested in the electro-synthesized sounds which were becoming more and more prevalent in the music of the mid-late 80’s and early 90’s. In 1993, Steen made the conscious decision to quit playing in the live bands, in order to pursue his chosen career of writing and producing studio based music.
Joining forces with renown hit song writer, Ma’am, who amongst others, has been the dual driving force behind international sensations, Aqua, The Cartoons, The Tamperer, Daniella Roth, Creamy and recently Caroline, Steen began writing in earnest, providing records for UK club act Baz and Danish ‘Popstars’ runner up Simon Cruise!
A chance meeting in 2003 brought Steen into contact with Carl M. Cox, Producer and Creative Director at Prolific Media Group in the UK. Forging a solid friendship, Steen has been involved in several PMG projects. These have included Baz, whose debut single; “Positive Reaction†was met with ecstatic reviews and a peak ‘Music Week’ Pop Club Chart position of number 25, and ‘Wonderland’, the animated TV show for youngsters. Steen is currently working with PMG on new material for American pop icon, Ernest Kohl as well as mixing Modernization’s new single, “You Cameâ€.
An entry into the 2004 Danish ‘Song For Europe’, drew Steen to the attention of Australian singer, Peter Wilson, himself no stranger to the charts in his home country. The first track that Steen produced, “I Love You Unashamed†was the one that got the ball rolling for Peter with Klone Records, having impressed the label’s director, Anne Plaxton. The track went on to feature on the Number 1 album, “Mad About The Boy 14†and remains a firm favourite with many NRG and pop music fans.
Following this success, Steen went onto co-write, produce and remix a further three songs for Peter’s forthcoming debut album, “Follow Me†(due for release in October ’07) including “Don’t Cry Tonight†which appeared on the album “Mad About The Boy 15†scoring a Number 9 position on the EuroNRG Top 40 chart in June 2007.
2005 saw Steen contribute to legendary music mogul Pete Waterman’s latest venture at the time; PWL Radio- the internet’s first dedicated pop music radio station. Seeing how long established Danish pop group, Infernal, were having a massive hit throughout Europe with their single “From Paris To Berlinâ€, he decided to do his bit by introducing Infernal to the UK via PWL Radio. With the backing of Infernal’s record company, Steen sent the single and an accompanying news article to the station. It went on to repeat its Europe wide success, becoming a UK Top 5 hit.
In addition to working on several new projects with PMG Productions, Steen has also recently produced for acts such as Blue Swan, Bimbo Boy, Spencer and the Applestone project.
