Just saying hello to all of you and want to share a bit from my African’s mission! Thank you so very much for your beautiful messages, words, love and support! I was in Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire! Can't describe the human pain and suffering! I saw adults and children who died from leprosy, cholera, AIDS and many more… some of them in my hands. Sometimes I cried and felt desperate and devastated and went somewhere and hid myself from the world and the pain but after that just went out and gave a glass of water to somebody, spent time with dying people and I was fully there with them in their last minute and I even didn’t talk their language.. I was just there! I am so grateful I was there. Also I faced in Africa something I thought I will never see- female genital mutilation! I worked with small girls who got horrible infections after “the surgery”. The girls were between 5-13 years old and because I am so very sensitive around small children to see that meaningless suffering made me feel so very sad. I saw all the different kinds of the mutilation- sunna circumcision, clitori..omy and infibulation /with a bit bigger girls/ which is the most horrible one because it is a clitori..omy followed by sewing up of the vulva. A small opening is left to allow urine and menstrual blood to pass. That is horrible because the procedure is frequently done under less than hygienic conditions, often by non-medically trained personnel, and usually without anaesthesia. Razor blades, knives or scissors are usually the instruments used. And I saw the horrible result. I saw infections, keloid formations, labial adherences, clitoral cysts, chronic urinary infections… and when I saw that on the body of small girls I got so angry and just did my best to make their suffering less. I must say at the same time that there is some positive change- in 1998 Senegal prohibited by law female circumcision! Now back in Europe I feel so strange! I have a big “food” problem because can’t bear the way we waste food. Every time somebody throw away food I feel almost dizzy because I know how people die somewhere because they don’t have handful of rice. I feel so very humble and grateful for everything in my life and believe more than before that every small effort makes a difference… sometimes our effort just looks like a drop in a vast ocean but I believe that better with that small drop!!! “It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway across the world.” Thank you again so much for the support you gave me with your messages and words! For it is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.Crisis in Darfur, Sudan Amid ongoing attempts to instill a lasting peace in Darfur, Mercy Corps continues to help more than 150,000 Sudanese displaced by the deadly, ongoing conflict. More than 200 of our staff are addressing the immediate needs of families — improving sanitation, providing clean water, distributing relief items, and creating safe places for children to learn and play. We're also helping women gain knowledge and skills they can use when they return home. A Prolonged Crisis Since rebels took up arms against the government in 2003, at least 200,000 people have died through violence, hunger and disease in Darfur, a remote, barren land about the size of France. More than 2.5 million have been forced to flee their homes. These internally displaced persons are extremely vulnerable to harassment and violence. Fighting and banditry prevented 355,000 in Darfur from receiving food aid in August 2006, according to the U.N. World Food Program, which still feeds 2.6 million Darfurians a month — nearly half the region's population. Even in a best-case scenario of political reconciliation and disarmament, millions of people in Darfur will remain extremely vulnerable and dependent on outside assistance for the coming years. Building Healthy Environments Mercy Corps has built or rehabilitated more than 4,000 latrines, trained dozens of men in latrine construction, and established a garbage-collection system where ten donkey carts collect waste from the camps each day. To increase access to safe water, our aid teams maintain hand-pumps and hand dug wells, test water quality and provide chlorination services at water points. Promoting Good Hygiene Nearly 200 Mercy Corps hygiene promoters — men and women selected and trained from within the community — go house-to-house in every camp distributing items such as soap and insecticide treated mosquito nets, and promoting good health practices. These safety measures help prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as cholera, Hepatitis E and malaria, which have claimed thousands of lives in Darfur. Protecting Vulnerable Women More than 4,000 women are trained to build fuel-efficient stoves, which require about half the wood of normal stoves. That means fewer hours collecting firewood, less time in dangerous wooded areas outside of camp and an income from selling the wood they gather but don't need for cooking. Various classes also offer women a chance to increase their literacy and learn skills such as baking, weaving or cheesemaking. Educating Youth In 16,000-person Mukjar, where nine out of ten residents are displaced from other villages, we've constructed, rehabilitated or furnished schools for all the town's 5,000 youth. In every camp where we operate, Mercy Corps and the Ministry of Education identify teachers, consult community leaders to develop school sites, and facilitate the instruction of Sudan's national curriculum to children aged 7-16. Tailoring an Effective Response Our efforts to help families persevere through the crisis continue to evolve and expand. Mercy Corps is working with community leaders to develop assistance projects that will help families raise poultry and crops, fund veterinary programs to protect their livestock, and establish community food stores. Future programs also will incorporate host communities, nomadic settlements and intact villages to lessen the potential for resource conflicts, facilitate the peaceful return of people to their communities, and build a stronger Darfur. --The conflict that erupted in Darfur, Sudan, in 2003 has forced more than two million people from their homes. Approximately 200,000 of them have fled across the border into Chad.--About 3.4 million people—more than half the population of Darfur—depend on international aid for their survival.--Estimates on the number of people killed as a result of the conflict vary widely from 180,000 to 400,000. Violence is one cause of death. Many people have also died from illness and malnutrition. The enormous humanitarian response has largely managed to stabilize conditions in the camps, but renewed insecurity is again threatening this progress.--Though Sudan’s government and one of the rebel groups signed a peace agreement on May 5, 2006, security in Darfur is now at its worst ever. Between July and September, 12 humanitarian aid workers, including one from Oxfam, lost their lives working in Darfur. That’s more than in the previous two years together.--Widespread insecurity across Darfur makes it extremely difficult for aid groups to deliver assistance. The United Nations estimates that four out of every 10 people who need assistance are not getting it because fighting and banditry make it too difficult to reach them.--The African Union has a small force deployed in Darfur. But the 7,000-member unit is ill equipped, lacks a strong mandate to protect civilians, and is too few in numbers to cover all of Darfur—an area about the size of France. It urgently needs more support from the international community. To 'let go' does not mean to stop caring; it means I can't do it for someone else.To 'let go' is not to cut myself off; it is the realization that I must not control another.To 'let go' is not to fix; but to be supportive.To 'let go' is not to be in the middle arranging all the outcomes; but to allow others to effect their destinies.To 'let go' is not to be protective; it is to permit another to face reality.To 'let go' is not to regret the past; but to grow and live for the future.To 'let go' is to fear less and love more. Back in the middle ages, a dispatcher went out to determine how laborers felt about their work. He went to a building site in France. He approached the first worker and asked, "What are you doing?" "What, are you blind?" the worker snapped back. "I am cutting these impossible boulders with primitive tools and putting them together the way the boss tells me. I am sweating under the blazing sun. It's back-breaking work, and it's boring me to death". The dispatcher quickly backed off and retreated to a second worker. He asked the same question, "What are you doing?" Some what encouraged, the dispatcher went on to a third worker, "And what are you doing?" he asked. "Why, can't you see?" said the worker as he lifted his arm to the sky. "I am building a cathedral". Now that's the joy of working. One day some three thousand years ago, King David commanded his court jeweler to make him a ring and inscribe upon it words which would enable the great king to temper his jubilance at times of triumph, as well as lift his spirits at moments of despair. The court jeweler rather handily crafted a ring of exquisite beauty, but his search to find the inscription that the king required eluded him altogether. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If God allowed us to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been.We could never fly! The good you find in others, is in you too. The faults you find in others are your faults as well. After all, to recognize something you must know it. The possibilities you see in others, are possible for you as well. The beauty you see around you is your beauty. This beautiful insect stands for change. It is the symbol of transformation. It is the symbol most likely to be selected by people that are not content with their lot in life and desire to change it. During the Second World War with Germany there were millions of people imprisoned in concentration camps destined to be gassed. Many were children. In 1945 when the Americans liberated these death camps, there was a curious oddity that they were faced with. Although these death camps were many miles apart and there was no way that the children could have communicated..... There was a common denominator that linked each camp, a common denominator that also linked the children together even at death. In the wooden barracks where the children were being held, the American soldiers found butterflies. They were carved in the doors, walls, and ceilings. Of course there were other animals carved in the woodwork as well, but the carvings of butterflies outnumbered the other drawings by ten to one. Now if these carvings were found in only one camp it would not be significant, but they were found in them all. Even though these camps were separated by hundreds of miles, did these poor children­moments from death­know something that we do not? Life after death? All available evidence points to this theory. These children knew that they would be born again. So if you are unhappy, depressed, and forlorn, the butterfly will help you achieve a major transformation in your life. Because of it being so delicate and beautiful, in the orient it is the symbol of a woman in love or a woman about to fall in love. The significant meaning of the butterfly lies in it's metamorphosis from egg to larva. Since the beginning of time the butterfly has been the symbol of the soul that physical death can not destroy. Because of it's very short life span the butterfly reminds us that life is precious and short.
