Queensland's most award design school
Design College Australia, established
in 1990, is an independently operated
graphic design college. The college
was founded on the belief that its
graduates must be ready to meet the
industry’s needs.
Today, Design College Australia is
highly regarded by the industry
because of its ability to provide well
trained and job ready graduates. This
has been achieved by maintaining
strong links with the industry through
professional associations with the
AGDA, Brisbane Art Club, AFA
Youngbloods and the DIA.Members of
these associations, together with
industry professionals, form part of
Design College Australia’s industry
advisory committee, which meets
regularly to ensure that our courses
remain up to date and relevant. It is
further enhanced by the fact that our
teaching staff are dedicated industry
professionals.
The Design College Australia
philosophy is that a student must first
understand the foundation of design to
reach their potential as a creative
designer. Computers and technology
play a pivotal role in design, however, it
is important to have an understanding
of the foundation of design – the
elements and principles that will be
drawn upon again and again not just a
as student but throughout their career in
whichever part of the industry they
specialise.
Who becomes a graphic designer?
How do you know whether a career in
grahic design is right for you. While
there are no stereotypes, designers
tend to share a few common traits.
Firstly, they are visual. They have an
interest in the visual world and see what
others do not. They drink in the world
around them, it’s colour and texture …
its rhythm.
Graphic designers are curious.
They ask questions and then question the
answers. They are abstract. They read,
they soak up experiences and ideas,
they experiment and explore by
observing and doing.
Graphic designers like to make things.
It is not enough to think or say something;
they like to create using their skills and
understanding of balance, colour and
textures.
About our courses
Design College Australia’s courses in
Visual Communication focus on
creating, thinking, intelligent designers
who have powerful visual
communication skills. Students build a
solid foundation by learning design
techniques, visual thinking, concept
development, color, composition,
typography and industry standard
technology and software, through briefs,
case studies and hands-on exercises.
Students are taught to work with innovation
within the constraints of the brief and
the available resources and technology,
with emphasis on the development of a
visual vocabulary, strong image
concepts, visual problem solving,
communication and perceptual skills.
Students start to build their portfolio on
the first day of class. Their time with
Design College Australia is a work in
progress and on completion graduates
are equipped with knowledge, strong
production skills and a professional
portfolio ensuring they are ready for the
industry. An Advanced Diploma in
Visual Communication from Design
College Australia can lead to careers all
over the world in advertising,
publication, multimedia, web
production, and animation … the list
goes on.
