Zaharias Karounis was given birth in Pakia Lakonias of Peloponnese. He studied in the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens and he is a candidate professor for the post of Byzantine Musicology. He studied Byzantine Music with the famous schoolteacher L. Kouzinopoulos and he also attended -by gaining a scholarship- the courses of "Theory of the European Music" in the Conservatoire of Athens. In the same Conservatoire he also took the courses of Classical Singing with professor M. Nikaki.
From 1998 he developed his artistic activity as a singer in the role of the Leader of the dance, by participating in the representation of the ancient Greek comedy of Aristophanes "Vatrahoi (Frogs)" held by the National Theatre of Greece in direction of mr. Tsianos. In 1999 he took part in the work "Vira tis Agires (Way the Anchors)", held by the National Theatre of Greece, in direction of St. Fasoulis, by performing the beautiful song of Mikis Theodorakis's "Tragoudi tis Xenitias" (The Song of the Exile). The same year, he collaborated with the "Orchestra ton Chromaton (Orchestra of Colours)" of Manos Hatzidakis, interpreting songs from the Asia Minor under the general show banner "Dyo Fones gia ti Loxandra (Two voices for Loxandra)".
At the summer of 2000 he collaborated with the "Lykeio ton Ellinidon Athinon (Lyceum of the Greek Women of Athens)" in the concert named "Thalassa (Sea)" in the Herodion Theatre and in July 2001 with the famous singer Maria Farandouri in the concert "Enas Aionas Elliniko Tragoudi (One Century of Greek Song)" also in the Herodion Theatre. At the summer of 2002 Zaharias Karounis participated in concerts around Greece with the famous traditional singer Domna Samiou, with whom he has a constant and close collaboration till the present moment. In September 2002 he and Maria Farandouri interpreted songs of M. Theodorakis, M. Chatzidakis and St. Xarhakos in the concert "Melodia Poiisi (Melody Poetry)" in the Herodion Theatre. At the same time he dealt with the recording and interpretation of songs from the East (Asia Minor - Kappadokia - Pontus - Turkey).
He also sang Rembetika and popular folk songs for 2 years in "Perivoli tou Ouranou (Garden of the Sky)" with the singer Mario from Thessaloniki. In 2003-2004 he made a number of appearances in the music scene named "The Train in Rouf" with Tatiana Lygari in the musical show "Ip’ atmon (Under Steam)". In summer of 2004 he took part in the musical representation "Talento - I Symmetria tis Armonias (Talent - The Symmetry of Harmony)", which was presented under the frames of Cultural Program of Athens 2004.
