Everyone always thinks of East Los Angeles or Boyle Heights as one of the worst places to visit or live. Known for our gangs, drive byes, violence and bad neighborhoods. Not everyone has seen the reality, truth and honesty that comes from a place like this. Filled with very different people and unique cultures. People here wont be pushed over and we will stand up for ourselves. Yeah it is hard to survive but it only makes us stronger through unity and strength. Which is something found in the east la music scene. Something honest and very hard to find in any other scene . Having to watch every step you take, because any moment your life can be taken from you, so we choose our friends wisely. There are many lies that come from people but theyre just here to bring you down. Thats something we chose to see through and it helps us look ahead ,helps us push forward and drives us to be determined and clear headed.
The Neglects came about in high school. Growing up, waking every day to do the same thing over and over, living life with no worries and as time passed by, kids grew into adults. Seeing that school wasnt going great for everyone, being kicked out and not cared for they realized through skating, listening to punk and living on these streets is when they figured that life isnt easy and all the things that we care for were slowly disappearing. They wanted their voices to be heard and not remembered as just some other kids down the block. Going to gigs, shows and helping out fellow bands is where they wanted to belong. Finally somewhere to fit in.
Starting off as a three piece (John, Eddie, Esteban) practicing for hours in any garage that they could find they found their sound. Started playing backyards gaining respect from bands such as Union 13, Make Move, Set Aside, The Croix, Opposition, Soultaker and many more. The Neglects were quickly recognized as one of east la's own. As The Neglects wanted to move forward they added two others to the band (David, Louie).
As the band grew up they decided to keep their punk roots and add a small edge to the music. People realized that the band members werent kids anymore and reached a small portion of their goal of getting their voices heard. Speaking only about what is true, life experiences, living the simple life and not having a care in the world to subjects that they grow sick and tired of and there needs to be something said. The band members dont take life for granted,and they give every ounce of themselves to the scene and have been for years. Always looking out for the people of our neighborhood and helping this community grow , the band have earned their place in this small world we call home.
The Neglects will never forget where they came from and the people who have been there for the band since the beginning. As they strive for a greater good with the weight of the world on their backs and the support from the people they love in their hearts.
