Band Members: Naomi is a member of THE LAST KINECTION....... Destiny and musical genes has led to the inevitable, highly anticipated collaboration of this hip hopping trio, The Last Kinection. Joel, Naomi and Jacob are no strangers to success within this industry. Naomi (MC Nay) was one half of Australia’s sexiest R&B Pop sensation ‘Shakaya’. Signed to a major label at the age of 16, she quickly climbed the ARIA charts and stage, with platinum selling singles and album. However, after many years Naomi became disheartened and frustrated with the limiting and somewhat superficial aspects of being signed to a major commercial label. Within a week of calling it a day for Shakaya, Nay gets a call from big brother Joel (Weno) with the news that he and Jacob (DJ Jay Tee) had the same fate with their group ‘Local Knowledge’. Local Knowledge was the first Indigenous group to perform at Triple J’s Live At The Wireless. Winning Music Oz ‘Best Indigenous Artist ‘in 2005. Winning a Deadly Award for ‘Best Group’. Their single ‘Black Fellas’ has become an Indigenous anthem of pride that introduced mainstream to Indigenous hip hop. So, this was it! The time had come to join forces, without limitations and hesitations. The foundation behind this musical connection is family! Naomi and Joel come from a large family belonging to the Kabbi Kabbi people of South East Queensland. At a frightening rapid pace they were losing their elders to the cycle of life. This reality was the reason behind the group’s name. The Last Kinection became a way for them to honour and express their pride, respect and knowledge for their culture and last remaining elder, their beloved grandmother, ‘Nutches’. Hence, the name of their debut album. Pronounced Nu-tches. (‘u’ as in Put) Which has now been dedicated in loving memory to this inspirational woman. ‘Nutches’ is unique in its sound, lyrically enriched, with something for the mind, body and soul. The album has a way of transporting you through emotions and situations. Taking you to dark places, where you will feel sadness, torment and anger, then show you the light, make you feel the love and have you laughing while you bounce to the beat. The tracks were written by MC Nay and Weno, through their reality. It’s the soundtrack to their lives, as Australian Indigenous young people (Murries), living an urban Australian life. All production was master minded by Weno and Jay Tee, by blending contemporary concepts, sounds and imagery with digital technologies then lacing the tracks with traditional chants, lingo and instruments. It’s the new school verses old school, so old its ancient! The first single and film clip is for ‘Ballooraman’, meaning ‘love’, a soul touching track with lyrics in their traditional Aboriginal dialect. Other standout tracks are ‘Commercial Radio’, featuring Urthboy from The Herd. A satirical song about the realities of, you guessed it, commercial radio. With a funky reggae feel this song is sure to stick in your head for days. Keeping with that reggae funk vibe is P.M.D (Propa Mad Deadly) featuring Astronomical from the reggae master blaster group Zennith (Kuranda, QLD). Brotha Black, helps lead the mob on ‘Worth Marching For’ a politically charged track covering racism, Indigenous and ethnic minority struggles and pride. The self empowerment continues, while you pump that fist with Radical Son (Central Coast) on track ‘I Can’. Then go on to chew the fat with Sista Native (Sydney) on track 10 titled ‘The Fat’, a hilarious shout out to the average Australian body. Waste no more time, with 16 tracks, there is one made just for you. In stores and online from August 9, out on BlackChili Productions, distributed through Shock Records. Their very first show was to an audience of 13000 people at The Stylin’ Up festival in Brisbane, 2006. They have been on the stages of Brisbane’s River Festival, The Woodford Dreaming Festival, The Sydney State Theatre for the Cannot Buy My Soul sell out concert series, performing alongside Missy Higgins, Paul Kelly, Tex Perkins, Kev Carmody and The Drones. The Newcastle Civic Theatre. The Sydney Opera House, the sold out Groovin the Moo festival in Maitland earlier this year, also featuring The Presets, Sneaky Sound System and Katalyst among others. They’ve rocked Sydney Uni’s Manning Bar and the University of Newcastle’s Bar On The Hill on numerous occasions. The Becks Bar for this year’s Sydney Festival. Currently touring nationally supporting The Herd. From July to September, this is definitely a show not to be missed. Check the dates and get your tickets fast, many shows have already sold out! Last year The Last Kinection were asked by Paul Kelly to be a part of the ‘Cannot Buy My Soul’, album tribute to the legendary Kev Carmody, through EMI. They recreated an energetic rendition of ‘The Young dancer is Dead’, which appears alongside the likes of Bernard Fanning, Tex Perkins, John Butler Trio, Troy Casser-Daley, Missy Higgins and Archie Roach to name a few. The first track they ever wrote is a powerful track called, ‘Still Call Oz Home’, which can be heard on their Myspace (www.myspace.com/thelastkinection). It is their version to this Aussie classic, which has already caused controversy, and immense pride. It is the track that gives most audiences goosebumps at live shows and makes the Rednecks (racists) fume! For the full story behind why it was written check their Myspace. The Last Kinection also run highly sought after music workshops, covering music biz insight, production, singing, rapping and dj techniques, lyric writing and performance/stage techniques. They have conducted these workshops in schools, youth and community centres and festivals. Encouraging, guiding and giving confidence to upcoming artists, those with interest and those who need a medium to express themselves in a positive way, or to assist them in healing. They are the favorite feature artist on the Barefoot Rugby League Show, shown on Channel 180 on Foxtel and Austar. Catch them on this July 31st, August 7 and 14 at 6.30pm. SBS and ABC television have various documentary style features on the group circulating on such programs such as Living Black, and Message Stick. There achievements so far have been outstanding, now loaded with this strong album, industry and community support, it’s an exciting time, watching them escalate.
