Sounds Like: This piece was included in the art exhibition 'Art and pigeon pie' which showcased many talented artists. The exhibition was held in St. Pancras crypt and this piece attempted to capture the voices of the crypt. When you listen to it, imagine it echoing within the dark passages and hidden crevices of the crypt.
many thanks to the actors and friends who lent their voices to this recording
Below it is the original blurb:
Histories are erased and rewritten in a constantly changing city. The crypt appears to be apart from this. underneath it all, it strives to remain the same. People’s names are etched in stone so that they are not forgotten and it is restored rather than rebuilt.
When St. Pancras crypt was closed in 1859 it could have easily been sealed up and left frozen in time; instead the crypt was used as an air raid shelter for both world wars, for storage and then finally as a gallery space. The history of the crypt is made so clear because nothing has been erased; instead there are traces of the past etched into the brickwork itself. Tombstones stand side by side with the abandoned bomb shelter which in turn houses contemporary pieces of art.
This piece attempts to represent the crypt and it’s memories. They are the imagined thoughts of the people who are buried under the crypt and those who have passed through.
