Jesse Palter...The Alter Ego

About Me

The story, as I was told, goes a little something like this: I was singing before I could talk, dancing before I could walk, playing the piano (classical lessons started when I was 6). I was bitten hard by the music bug. I knew I wanted to be a performer/musician in some capacity. Period. I would beg my mom to drive me to auditions around town and got involved in professional musical theater productions. I went to a middle school that specialized in the performing arts. There I played oboe as well as trumpet. Played the trumpet in jazz band. That's where I really began improvising. Bought every jazz record I could get my hands on. Started writing music (around the age of 12). Recorded my first original song (the quintessential bubble gum pop tune) at the age of 13. Yes, it was on Napster. Wew - throwback! Collaborated with the incredible producer Andrew Gold (Linda Ronstadt, Celine Dion, James Taylor) out in Nashville. Had a production deal with the Bass Brothers (Eminem, 50 Cent) when I was 14, recorded several original tracks, ended up in meetings with some heavy record company A&R execs and proceeded to tell them that I wanted to be a jazz vocalist right there in their offices!!!! Wow, I was quite the pistol! So, I went back to the drawing board. I ended up auditioning for various music programs and decided upon attending the University of Michigan's School of Music for Jazz & Improvisational Studies where I studied theory, jazz harmony, voice and piano with the likes of Donald Walden, Geri Allen and Dennis Wilson. There I spent my time listening, transcribing, tirelessly practicing scales and upping my repertoire by delving deep into many of the standards from The Great American Songbook. I began to get opportunities to put my own band together at various Detroit venues. I became a regular on the Detroit scene and I ultimately ended up meeting the cats that are currently in my Quartet. We have been performing as a unit for over 4 years now and have had the good fortune of playing various festivals and jazz clubs and shared the stage with some pretty incredible people. It has been a lot of fun!!!
And then came the Alter Ego... I can't wait to share this music with you!
Jesse Palter & The Alter Ego is the brain child of Jesse Palter (Detroit/Chicago) and Sam Barsh (Chicago/New York). After meeting in 2006, they began collaborating on original music that has been making waves amongst their audiences and contemporaries alike. Both established musicians and dynamic performers in their own right, The Alter Ego is creating a niche for themselves by blending catchy hooks, dance beats, captivating lyrics and opening them in to an improvisational format. They spent a month performing in Macau to rave reviews and are now debuting their exciting and promising project at various venues in the States.
Brace yourself for the alter ego. This is just the beginning. Thanks to you, the listener, for supporting the music. Shalom!
