“I've slept on almost every couch from Seattle to Mexicoâ€, says Chris Forry, the sometimes hushed and breathy then startlingly clear and powerful voiced singer from rural Washington. He goes on to say “I have made some of the best friends a man could ask for and I have burned my share of bridges then walked back across to stay warm in the fire.â€
Chris never really struggled to fit in at school there wasn’t much point in trying since his family moved around so much. His family lived in 16 different cities from the time he was born until he was 4. From then on he went to a different school every year of his life until the last year of junior high where his family finally settled in Enumclaw, Washington.
In Enumclaw he met a group a friends that shared his interest in music and they soon began rehearsing 4 or 5 nights a week and doing shows under the name Eleventhour. The band was an award winning original act that played regularly for about 6 years all over Washington, mainly around Seattle. Eleventhour also played a handful of shows in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. “We’d play on a dirt pile on the top of mountain if they had a generator, it happened more than onceâ€, he says and laughs.
Chris’ biological father (he was raised by his mother and stepfather) was also a musician would take him to the studio where the musicians were hanging out “smoking pot and drinking beer and it looked exactly what Disney Land would look like to meâ€. Chris was eleven years old.
After Eleventhour Chris moved to Los Angeles where he put together a band and started doing shows. He also won Acoustic Artist of the year at the South Bay Music Awards. “I went down there to see what I could do on my own. You know? Change my scene, change my life, find out who I wasâ€.
When asked what makes him want to be a musician Chris struggles to answer at first and then says “I love to play, I love to tell stories and connect with people. There’s nothing else I can do. Some people crunch numbers and that’s how they get their kicks. Music is just what I doâ€.
Chris plays several instruments including Mandolin and piano, but mainly guitar. His major influences were Simon and Garfunkel, Jeff Buckley, and Alice in Chains but there are many, many others ranging from the Everly Brothers to Guns and Roses. Growing up Chris developed his talent on his own sitting in his room and playing guitar or hiding out at school skipping class to sit in the choir room and play guitar. “It got me kicked out of schoolâ€. All that hard work shows in his playing and his songs. He has a large body of work, 60 or so songs that are finished and 30 or 40 more that have either been forgotten or are still being worked on.
Chris’ music is passionate and dynamic with masterfully developed lyrics that are inspired by his life, loves, and friends. The sound is a cross between Crosby Stills and Nash, Alice In Chains, and old Matchbox 20. Right now Chris is back in Washington, looking to put together a band. Although his music is strong and well crafted enough to be pulled off acoustically especially with his powerful voice and passionate delivery, he loves the energy that comes with playing in a band.
Until he puts together a band Chris is writing music and booking acoustic shows wherever he can. Every once in awhile if he finds himself with a free afternoon he’s known to play on the street in Seattle with a few of his buddies just for the fun of it and to pick up a couple bucks.
