About Me

I have been making art - drawings, paintings, designs for installations, artbooks, sound art, photographs and videos over the last 15 years and had used to make and design alot of strange fashion garments that disintegrated after 6 months. I studied visual art subjects at Uni. Like Peter Greenaway the film director says 'you have to learn to see, seeing is not something that's being taught' so teaching myself to become visually sensitive, to be able to read an aesthetic has been in the backround of my art development. In 2005, 2006 and 2007 I exhibited artist books at the Noosa Regional Gallery's annual Artists Book exhibition. These were sculptural works playing with the book form (a hanging mobile in 2005, a handbound book with 12 original images in 2006 and a perspex structure in 2007). Being in London in 2005 and stumbling along the Circle Press workshop, Westbourne Grove had been a good co incidence to what an artist book is and also to what I would begin making in the follwing years Before this in 1996 I made a series of drawings of installations that came out of a period of going to the State Library everyday and listening to their contemporary classical music collection on headphones and drawing and reserching. Out of this came 5 installations for large spaces based around mechanical arms, strings and sound, light. I then saw an artist in World Art magazine, Barry Schwarz, who was making these electro sculptures and sound based around ideas of Tesla, I sent the work to him and after a short correspondence forgot about the drawings. Some years later he came from LA/Berlin and was commissioned for a show at the Brisbane Powerhouse of which I was able to partly volunteer. That was the end of my correspondnece but I did receive the drawings back in a silver foil case like they use at NASA. In 2008 I exhibited an artist book again at Access Arts Crossing Divides exhibition at Metro Arts, Brisbane. Over the last few years I have been working on a series of site specific recordings for solo violin. Called Musique sans Frontiers (after the humanitarian group Medicines sans Frontiers) they are a collection of improvised pieces responsive to certain environments that I choose for their responsive tonal properties and backround story.. actually mostly I just choose a space I like and just start playing. Precision and complete concentration are what composing and playing these pieces require. But more on them another time. Supporting artists in their endeavours is something I enjoy doing so occassionally I will write about another artists work if I feel drawn to it. They are not these unreadable academic type writings seen in most art publications, they are written as reflections of skill and meaning with a humanist bent as I eschew formalism. My current plans are to exhibit my first multi arts installation. The video's you see here are merely a platform for the sound and compositions at the moment. The drawings, some are working drawings and some are finished pieces. The photographs, well sometimes I find taking a photograph is something to do when I can't draw or write or play, it's easy and soothing to take a photograph. However I bring all these ideas together and tell a story using various medium through installation.
