The Moles

About Me

Their one and only release was a single, "We Are the Moles, " but it turned out that they weren't. They were Simon Dupree & the Big Sound, the late 1960's incarnation of Phil, Derek, and Ray Shulman (and their bandmates Tony Randell and Pete O'Flaherty), in the years before they jumped into prog-rock as Gentle Giant.
The alias lasted for one single, "We Are The Moles," which is a highly regarded piece of psychedelia. The precise reason why it was released under the alias remains unknown, and given the Shulman brothers' reticence about discussing Gentle Giant, one imagines being greeted by a fusilade of bullets on inquiring about "The Moles." The mystery remains.
Allegedly the tape of the recording for their single was left in a train station locker and the key sent to a major English music publication with a letter stating that the tape should be released on the Parlophone label. This story is unlikely and the truth is simply that a publicity rumour was circulated to the music press and to Disc Jockeys that it was recorded by The Beatles and for a short time it was known as "The Beatles in Disguise". The record was doing quite well picking up sales, when Syd Barrett gave the game away. Interest immediately waned in The Moles.
