Cadence

About Me

Four Men. Four Microphones. No Instruments. Start with a playlist that covers jazz, popular music, doo-wop, even classical. Add in four guys who can’t help but have fun. The result is a show that has something for everyone: instrumental imitation, sophisticated harmonies, and engaging audience interaction. This winning formula has earned CADENCE international recognition as “one of the finest quartets to make an appearance in the a cappella scene”.
In the journey from four-guys-in-the-living-room to international touring band, CADENCE has performed for many of the greatest names in vocal music including Quincy Jones and Manhattan transfer. CADENCE has also had the honour of singing with vocal maestro Bobby McFerrin in 2003 at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and in 2005 at Roy Thomson Hall.
CADENCE has performed across the world, with delighted audiences across North America, Asia, and Europe. Wherever they go, CADENCE delivers its mandate: to explore and demonstrate that the voice has no limits.
Close your eyes: you’ll never believe you’re hearing only voices. Open your eyes: enjoy the show!

TWENTY FOR ONE 2005 -
“Tremendous.... Great arrangements and delivery, very inventive ideas: a nice new twist in a cappella singing. Bravo!”
-- Peter Eldridge, New York Voices
Continuing the tradition of redefining the “vocal band”, Twenty For One is a balance of hip jazz, cool pop, and clever and thoughtful original songs. Twenty For One was nominated for a 2005 Juno Award, and won three Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.

AARON JENSEN - (Tenor) [email protected] -
Aaron Jensen is a multifaceted vocalist, composer, arranger, instrumentalist, music director and clinician. He studied composition at York University in Toronto and since graduating with an honours degree, has been actively performing and touring with various musical groups including the eighty voice Amadeus Choir, the South African song and gumboot quartet Dina Ledi, the renaissance octet Voci Strane and the 1980s a cappella tribute band Retrocity. His creative offerings, which have been performed in North and South America and in Europe, have included recent premieres by artists such as the world-renowned Swingle Singers, the Toronto based Univox choir and by the Dimanche Matin Sax Quartet. In 2006, he was financially backed to compose, orchestrate and stage a new full-length musical entitled O.E.D. Dementia, Devotion and the Writing of the Oxford English Dictionary which premiered at the E. A. Rawlinson Center for the Performing Arts in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and was met with critical and public acclaim. When he's not occupied singing with the Cadence boys, Aaron stays active doing voice work for television and radio, composing cryptic crossword puzzles, and climbing indoor rock walls.

ROSS LYNDE - (Tenor) [email protected] -
Ross has been performing live since he was a teenager. He started out learning the guitar, and quickly progressed to trumpet and piano while playing in different groups, school productions, rock bands and recording projects. After a brief hiatus from the music scene, Ross returned to study piano, vocal improvisation, and world music with Casey Sokol and Trichy Sankaran. He graduated from York University with a Music degree and a new job as second tenor in CADENCE; having sung with Kevin and Carl in Wibijazz’n’ while at York, it was a logical next step. Ross remains active in the Toronto Rock’n’Roll scene playing guitar and piano with the original and Top-40 band Shemp, and teaches guitar on the side.

CARL BERGER - (Baritone/Bass) [email protected] -
Carl has been involved in the Canadian music scene for over 15 years, and has been singing a cappella since high school. After tours of duty with such groups as the Toronto Orpheus Choir, York University’s Wibijazz’n’, and the all-male a cappella outfit No Band Here, Carl decided to explore the “four-man format” and co-founded the vocal band CADENCE. Carl is a graduate of Arts York and the York University music program, where he earned his degree in ethnomusicology and jazz piano under the tutelage of Phil Dwyer, Mike Murley and Mark Eisenman. When he's not performing with Cadence, he maintains a busy schedule teaching piano, guitar, voice and saxophone to all ages.

KURT SAMPSON - (Bass/Vocal Percussion) [email protected] -
Originally from Charlottetown, PEI, Kurt's musical endeavors began at the age of 11 with the trombone, guitar, and singing, and eventually moved on to include the bass, drums, and piano. At 17, he moved to Montreal to study jazz music at McGill University where he majored in trombone performance and recently finished his master’s degree. While in Montreal, Kurt had the opportunity to teach at the University, directing one of McGill’s widely-acclaimed jazz orchestras. Some of his other experiences include singing, beat boxing, and directing vocal ensembles such as Tonal Ecstasy, Voice Box and Ardesco. Having performed across North America, Europe and the Caribbean, Kurt has gained experienced in many musical disciplines. He’s also taken part in numerous festivals, workshops and camps in Canada. In addition to his shows with Cadence, Kurt continues playing trombone, arranging and composing music, contributing to Canada’s jazz scene, and supporting all facets of music.
