Humble, gifted, a warm heart, talented musician/songwriter/producer. These are just a few words that describe the character and personality of this young up-and-coming talent.
Born on the beautiful island of St. Thomas, U.S Virgin Islands, DeShawn comes from a musical family. His father being a very talented brass player, and his grandmother, an anointed singer, it was only natural that “D” (as everyone knows him) walk down a similar road. Picking up the clarinet and saxophone at age 12, DeShawn learned the basics and importance of music theory, which has kept his musical foundation solid ever since. Shortly after, he began to play the piano, which has become his primary weapon of choice as everyone knows. He began to play in his home church and developed a love for contemporary music, including gospel, R&B, smooth jazz, and of course reggae music. Known, for being a musical genius at a young age, there was no doubt that “D” would eventually walk into his musical destiny.
After earning a scholarship at age 16 to the world famous Berklee College of Music in 2001, “D” discovered an area of music that he never thought he would explore. This is where his love for production and engineering began.
He graduated from Berklee in 2005 with honors while doing a dual degree in Music Business/Management and Music Production & Engineering. He spent the next 2 years developing his sound, and in 2007, he launched D'NAJE Entertainment (www.dnaje.com). He now resides in Boston MA, and is busy in and out of the studio constructing and developing his own team of talented artist and writers.
"My company’s main focus is all centered around one goal, delivering positive, energetic and explosive music & productions. I would never produce anything that is negative or that contradicts my morals. I love writing positive songs, love songs, gospel songs, anything that you can get up and groove to, dance to, laugh to, and even cry to. That’s my style. I just love to have fun with my music. That’s the key for me and that’s what keeps me ticking.” This up-&-coming entertainment company is sure to be making some noise in the music industry very soon.
Being a young up-and-coming producer and entrepreneur, “D” ultimately understands the work that it takes to get to the level where he desires to be. He continues to study producers & writers like Quincy Jones, Sergio Mendes, Brian Michael Cox, Warryn Campbell and his two favorites, Rodney Jerkins and Kirk Franklin, just to name a few. He is constantly and steadily working on his sound, and one thing that is evident about him is that he is the type of person who embraces criticism, and uses it as fuel to work harder.
Outside of music and being in the studio, DeShawn enjoys spending time with his family, and taking trips home to the Virgin Islands to visit. Keeping God first plus Humility definitely equals Success, and DeShawn "Big D" Hendrickson is a walking, talking witness of that.
