Saxophonist and woodwind player Lars Gulliksson is living in Stockholm, Sweden, where he has established himself as one of the most versatile improvisers, mastering a wide range of styles and also being a gifted composer and arranger.
For about 15 years he has worked with his own groups as well as various other professional bands, making appearances in Europe, New York, Cuba, Radio, TV etc.
He is directing his own independent record label, BReathING maCHIne , devoted to releasing creative improvising artists.
Gulliksson began to play the saxophone at the age of 15 and graduated from music schools and Music College in Sweden.
Then he moved to New York where he studied with greats such as George Coleman, Ellery Eskelin, Richie Beirach, George Garzone and many others, and also attended The Manne's College of Music. He had several opportunities to perform with his own band as well.
After returning to Sweden he started working as a freelance and made his first CD recordings. A project that attracted much attention during recent years, is the Swedish Mingus Band (a k a Siegmund Freud’s Mothers), directed by Gulliksson.
The tenor saxophone is his main instrument, but he has expanded the vocabulary and doubles on most other saxophones, flutes and clarinets.
His openness to experimenting, other sounds and world music has led to collaborations with Moroccan musicians and music studies in Marrakesh. Gulliksson has, together with saxophonist Roland Keijser in the group Kalousch , become a unique Scandinavian performer of the Ghayta (Moroccan shawm). Various wooden and bamboo flutes are now also part of his musical equipment.
