2007 Post-Season AGM

**** HISTORY ****
by Roger Jones

Roving Reporters were formed in 1965 by three local newspaper journalists among them John Motson who went on to become BBC Television's number one soccer commentator and who today is president of the club and president of the Barnet Sunday League.
After one season playing friendlies, the club were instrumental in the formation of the Barnet Sunday League and today are the only founder members still in existence. The 2nd X1 joined the league in 1967 and are comfortably the longest-serving reserve team.

After spending the first two competitive years in Division 1, the 1st X1 went into the Premier Division for the 1968-9 season. The following season was arguably their most successful in history - they finished third (after being top with just three games to play) and were Senior Cup semi-finalists.

The season after that came our first trophy - the Potters Bar Charity Cup following a 3-1 extra-time victory over Potters Bar Crusaders with whom the club was to forge strong links in years to come. But our first major honour - and the last for many years! - arrived in 1972 when the first team won the Senior Cup for the only time in our history with a 1-0 victory, also in extra-time, against Fairfield United at Barnet's Underhill ground in front of a crowd of several hundred.

Despite that success, the 1st X1 were relegated at the end of the following season and despite bouncing straight back as Division 1 runners-up, were relegated again in 1977 and once more in 1981 which heralded, by previous standards, the start of an unsuccessful period. By 1985 the first team had slipped to Division 3 which, curious to relate, coincided with the event that in years to come was to have a significant influence on the club's well-being - the signing of several players from youth side Barnet Wanderers.

A renaissance was not too long in coming. In 1988-89, the first team were promoted as Division 3 champions; two seasons later were promoted again after finishing third in Division 2; and the season after that were Division 1 runners-up which meant that after an absence of 11 years we were back in the top division.

During this same period, the 1st XI reached two league cup finals, losing the Junior Consolation Trophy 2-1 to Muswell Hill in 1987, and winning the Junior Cup in 1991 with a thrilling extra-time victory over East Barnet United Services Club at Underhill, the scene of the club's Senior Cup triumph 19 years earlier.

Since regaining Premier Division status in 1992, the team has led something of a yo-yo existence, having twice more been relegated and twice climbing back up, most recently April 2005 when they became Division 1 champions for the first time.

And what of the 2nd X1? For years, they neither managed to finish higher than third nor reach a cup final, and famously in the mid-1980s failed to gain a solitary league win in either of two successive seasons. But it says much for their resilience that there was seldom, if ever, a time when there was talk of disbanding the side. And gradually, as things improved for the 1st X1 as the 1990s approached, so did life in the reserves.

In 1991-92, the 2nd X1 achieved their first earned promotion by finishing runners-up in Division 4, and three years later made their cup final debut. Unfortunately, they were crushed 7-1 in the Junior Cup by Barnet Youth, who were later to reach the Premier Division, and it was not much better 12 months later when they lost 5-1 to Nimrod in the Consolation Trophy final. But two cup finals in successive years still represented a major achievement for a team that had under-achieved for far too long.

But as reserve teams (and 3rd X1s) in the league have come and largely gone again over the years, Roving Reporters Reserves have kept on going, often in the face of adversity that other clubs would not have survived. And that, just possibly, has been the club's greatest achievement of all.
