About Me

I'm based in Newcastle upon Tyne and work under a variety of pseudonyms including infamous shifty-pop purveyor Mannequin Licker (debut album out soon on Co-Lab). I am an oboist and pianist - I also play the guitar impressively badly. As Uncle Goggles I produce films using found/original/archive footage as well as collage-based artworks and SU10 sound-collage pieces. Very occasionally I write scores for various small ensembles, and these generally incorporate a fair amount of structural "openness" and opportunity for intuitive reinterpretation. I produce electroacoustic/electronic/acousmatic work and will endeavour to regularly post snipplets here for your pleasure. Currently underway is a project tentatively entitled 'Broken Toys', which is part of a larger exploration into what I call 'reluctant technologies' and how their unpredictable "agency" affords opportunity both in composition and in improvised music. I am always looking for people who are willing work/play/explore.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Also a member of My Little Pop Group.
Influences: Earle Brown, Gwilly Edmondez, People Like Us, Tron Lennon, Kyle Bruckmann, Tao Sambolec, Harrison Maudlin, David Stackenas, Messiaen, Fennesz, Richard Barrett & Furt, and loads, loads more.
Sounds Like: Here is a review of a recent performance by the improvisation collective My Little Pop Group in which Jamie plays oboe: "This four piece perform energetic improvisations despite the oppressive heat and new strings. Their performance is professional but avoids becoming too po-faced and anal. Incus and Derek Bailey have been very influential on these guys. They play, but not in a straightforward manner. Boundaries and comfort zones are pushed but a thread of funk is always retained. Instruments are scraped, jarred, sucked and scored in a delightful manner. Each musician participates fully in this improv orchestra and devours the collective energy".
