BIOGRAPHY
Carl Cosby is a name that should be widely recognised in the South West hard trance scene. For years Carl has been championing the European sound in his DJing sets and hasrecently started to produce music in this style. Hailing from Plymouth, 28 year old Carl celebrates a decade of DJing, and is still supporting the trance music which influencedhim in the first place, in his energetic and driving euphoric sets.
Influenced by the sounds of Mark EG and M-Zone from early tape packs, a young Carl decided to purchase a pair of record decks and practice diligently in his bedroom. It wasthen through his work as a glass collector at this time, that he met some local DJs into the same music as himself, and was offered a set at a Plymouth nightclub. His firstDJing break shortly followed when he was offered a residency at the infamous Sound Factory nightclub in Plymouth, whilst only being 18 years old at the time.
Carl built up a reputation of having some of the most exclusive tracks in Europe in his record box, playing many exclusive white labels from the likes of Fog Area, Drizzly,Tunnel, Overdose and many other established and in demand hard trance labels. This was at the time when this style was almost unheard of in the United Kingdom and only ahandful of DJs (like the previously mentioned Mark EG and M-Zone) were playing.
In 1999, After meeting with 97 FM Plymouth Sound's Dance host Darren Watts during a set at the Sound Factory, Carl was offered the chance to play on Plymouth Sound, which wasthe peak time Saturday Night dance show. Listener figures for the station attracted on average over 100,000 listeners on a weekly basis, which helped Carl build up his name.Following his debut set, he was offered a guest mix monthly residency on the show, which gave him the opportunity to showcase all these upfront tracks he was also DJing with.
Carl often ventured out of Plymouth on nights out, and it is here where he discovered The Monastery nightclub in Torquay. It was here that he met the promoters of the nightand after being recommended by other DJs from his hometown in Plymouth, Carl was offered a set, which turned into regular appearances, and it was these sets which were thehighest point of his career.
Playing at The Monastery allowed Carl to DJ alongside huge names of the scene, such as Graham Gold, John 00 Flemming, Lisa Pin Up and of course Carl's favourite DJ Mark EG,this was a huge honour for him having to play alongside one of his DJing heroes. Carl was approached by Tom Costelloe, the promoter of the legendary Dance Academy nightclub toplay for the club, which was another honour for him, and at the time also, Carl played sets for Candystore as well, and introduced German producer Marc La Cruz to the UK to playat this venue.
Now to the present, and Carl is still enthusiastic about his DJing, retaining the style he has always played, and also including some of the more developed trance that ishitting the shelves recently. Sets have been numerous for Carl, with regular appearances at Tall Trees in Newquay, and other venues, such as The Warehouse/C103 and also TheCooperage in Plymouth, with numerous sets to follow.
He has also been concentrating heavily on production, invested in a studio and has recently finished his debut production 'Glücklich', which has received support from DannySlade (of I-DJ Magazine, and Escape in Swansea) and numerous others. The follow up to this track, entitled 'Vivid' includes a remix from local producer Louk, who has had trackssigned to many European labels including Dave Joy's Joyride imprint, and Scot Project's Druck label.
Many more productions are to follow and with the dedication and drive that has seen Carl through the past decade, it would be worth checking his sound out!
