Sounds Like: Rave Magazine's Review of Drive Home The Stakes (Hydropunk/MGM)The evolution of Godnose continues! For those not smart enough to keep up with this local quartet live, the make-up of this album will come as both a shock and surprise - vocalist Claire Obst has stepped up to take full-time vocal duties from Ben Nose, changing everything about the sound of the band.No longer gut-tearing metal and hardcore from start to finish, there’s a different chemistry within these 10 songs. Sure, Ben’s guitar in ‘Keys To The City Sewers’ (locked in with a pulverising rhythm section) is as ball-breaking as anything that’s come before, but the mood in ‘Step Below The Waterline’ is more inclusive and not so audibly punishing or aggressive. There’s even (for lack of a better term) a ballad on the album in the form of ‘Sombre Around The Lounge’.But fear not, the trademark Godnose metal licks are still to be found in (the song) ‘Seaside Intensity Vortex’ and ‘In Pursuit Of The Golden Mullet’ - Drive Home The Stakes provides a challenging listen of fresh and expansive sounds.(David Carlito)
