The Rich History Of The Woodlawn Theatre: A San Antonio Resurrection
The historic WOODLAWN THEATRE opened in 1946 as an elegant venue for Hollywood films. The theatre’s architect, John Eberson, also constructed San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre. The WOODLWAN THEATRE was the home of the world premier of “The Alamo†in 1960 starring John Wayne, in which he also made his directorial debut.
It wasn’t until 2006 when the theatre was placed under new ownership by one of San Antonio’s newest theatrical stage companies, Amphisphere Theatre Productions. Their mission: To provide San Antonio with beautiful stage productions that will enrich the community with art and culture at an affordable price.
The Woodlawn Theatre is also now home to Amphisphere Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to training students for the art of musical theatre including: dancing, stage movement, acting , and singing.
"Little Shop of Horrors" was Amphisphere Theatre Productions first live musical, which opened on November 3, 2006. This theatre company branched out to new heights by being the first to stage Disney's "HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL" in San Antonio, with 7 weekends of sell-out performaces. Other very successful productions include: "JOSEPH and The Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat", Irving Berlin's "ANNIE GET YOUR GUN", "JEKYLL and HYDE: The Musical", the 50's classic rock-n-roll musical "BYE BYE BIRDIE", the rival of Disney's "HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL", the musical comedy "FOREVER PLAID", William Shakespear's "TAMING of the SHREW","THE WIZARD of OZ", America's favorite musical "GREASE", and now the Classic Vaudeville Musical "CHICAGO".
Amphisphere Theatre Productions welcomes you to the fast growing theatre in Texas, the WOODLAWN THEATRE.

DIRECTORS NOTES: I fell in love with the concept of this show when it was introduced to me because this musical production is like "RENT" meets "Jesus Christ Superstar". This show sets Jesus as more of the Messiah, but still encompasses the thoughts of Judas, creating tension and passion. Being that this show is sets to some familiar 1980's rock tunes, it also has some new music that I have grown to love. This is not just another passion churchy musical, this show rocks the stage and meets the needs of both secular and spiritual actors. Its over all message, that J.C. ROCKS! I am looking for strong singers and dancers with positive passion for working with others and the arts.
