ROCKITS

About Me

In a day when it seemed like Rockabilly was going to die, a band was brought down from Rockabilly Heaven, a Rockabilly savior, and brought Rockabilly music back from the brink of death. Now, twenty-years later, the Rockits are celebrating the twenty-year anniversary of the divine birth. With Lead Singer/Lead Guitarist Buddy Dughi fronting the band, Stand-up Drummer Pete Bonny drummin’ and yellin’, and Doghouse Bass player Steve Herney slappin’ and screamin, the Rockits took their revved up form of neo-rockabilly all over Southern California, up to Modesto, California, and to the bright lights of the city that never sleeps, Las Vegas. You may have seen them cruisin’ around town in their custom pink and black ’57Chevy.Not only were the Rockits rockin the clubs out-playing any band that crossed their path, but in 1988, they twice tore up their competition as Two-time Champs on the world famous Gong Show forcing celebrity judge Mr. T to say, “I pity the fool that doesn’t rock to the Rockits!”The Rockits, who’s earliest incarnation was the Top Cats, was heavily influenced by the earlier cat bands such as Stray Cats and Polecats, as well as Jimmy and the Mustangs and The Rockin’ Rebels. Of course there was the original Rockabilly cats influence there as well. The influence of these cool cat bands on top of the mystique of the 50’s culture lead the Rockits to release their one-and-only record, a three-song, pink and black vinyl 45, “Real Rockin’ Rockabilly.” “Real Rockin’ Rockabilly” included two Buddy Dughi originals, “Cruisin’ All Night” and “TwoTimin’ Baby” along with their tribute to Ricky Nelson, “Stood Up.” The record preceded their hit video for “Cruisin’ All Night.“ A limited number of this pink and black masterpiece has been unearthed and will be available at up coming shows as well at this sight, so don’t miss out on this once in a life time opportunity. The Stray Cats may be credited for bringing Rockabilly back in a time when no one knew what Rockabilly was, but it was the Rockits that breathed new life into the body that was left on the road to die. Stay tuned for more vintage pics, recordings, news and info from the Rockits, and look for Pete, Buddy, and Steve at a venue near you. This is the RocknWriter, Mik Homer sayin’, be a big scene and I’ll catch ya on this flip-side…
