Magic, surprise, art, and quality: Top class football. Step overs, steals, goals, assists... Robson de Souza, Robinho, the new pearl of Real Madrid who is already compared to Pelé. Audacity or reality, what is for sure is that this attacker leads the arrival of a new generation of Brazilian forwards. He triumphed at Santos, and then managed to open the doors to the ultimate team. Robinho wanted to conquer Europe, and to make his dream a reality he chose to sign for Madrid in 2005.
At the age of six he demonstrated an ability far beyond his years, and in 1993, at the age of nine, he scored 73 goals in indoor football with Portuarios. "There are footballers who are born with a gift for football and God gave it to Robinho," said Betinho, the Madridista's footballing father in an interview with the Spanish sports daily AS. His step-overs and his dribbling caught the attention of all the big Brazilian clubs, and Robinho ended up at Santos, where Pelé, Pepe, Dorsal, Mengalvio, and Coutinho were all launched to fame in the 1960's.
His cheerful demeanor and the artistic manner in which he plays his football have captivated everyone, including Pelé. Moments after meeting Robinho, O'Rei was quoted as saying, "This kid will bring us a ton of pleasure." Pelé was right, and Santos soon swung open the doors to the First Team, who he won the Brazilian Championship with in 2002.
After "graduating" from Santos, Robinho earned the right to don the Brazilian national team shirt and to share a dressing room with the likes of Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, Emerson, Ronaldinho, and Kaká.
