About Me

DJ STEPHENWhenever anyone asks about a Soca session in Georgia, the next question after the answer is given is almost invariably going to be, "is Stephen playing". That is because DJ Stephen, since before the age of 18, has practically dominated the Soca scene in Georgia, where the fastest growing Caribbean community in the United States (probably world outside of the Caribbean) exists.Born in Carenage, Trinidad and Tobago WI, Stephen's father was one of the old school Reggae DJs that had an extreme influence on Stephen, he grew up watching him. Other influences include DJs Glen D' Music Factory, Tony Tempo, and Back 2 Basics. However he credits his mother for him becoming a DJ.When they first migrated to Georgia, Stephen's mother got him enrolled in Ibis International so that he would not get bored with a new place and new people. Ibis at the time was known for being an old school soca DJ. As such the alliance of this young phenomena and the long time veteran was to create a very solid combination that was able to entertain different generations.Of course this helped DJ Stephen to evolve his style into one that embodies the old school flava and the new school. Stephen blends mixes with the main purpose of keeping people on their feet, dancing at all times. Stephen being versatile will do this with a variety of music genres.Due to all this DJ Stephen was able to achieve high honours in the DJ game. He won the Annual DJ Rama 4 years in a row (2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006). He also Shared Best DJ on the Road Trophy in Houston Caribfest 3 years in a row: 2003, 2004, and 2005 (with Madd Vybes and DJ Strikeforce). On top of this Stephen shared Best DJ on the Road in Miami carnival 2004 (with DJ Maestro). One of his proudest moments came when he was selected as the only Soca DJ to introduce Soca music and my culture to a number of world leaders. This occurred at the 2004 democratic world Leaders Summit in Brunswick Georgia.Stephen has performed with Calypso and Soca greats Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Crazy, Shurwayne WInchester, Bunji Garlin, Kevin Lyttle, Rupee, Allison Hinds, Machel Montano, Byron Lee & the Dragoneers, Leon Coldero and Many more. Some of Stephen's most memorable performances include: the 2005 Houston Caribfest where he was on stage with Tony Tempo in front of about 5000+ people who had been sitting down when he got to the stage, then once he started playing, within seconds the people had leaped out of their seats and were rushing to the front of the stage, jumping and waving like I have never seen. Another moment was winning Soca Rama 2003; everything went just as planned that night.Stephen is motivated by the people that try to keep him down; they make him set his goals and expectations even higher. Stephen though also looks at living life and being healthy as always being a motivational blessing.Speaking of passions and goals; Stephen's passions include immensely enjoying the opportunity to spread his culture. On this he quotes Dawg e Slaughter "Soca in my veins, Soca in my blood". His ultimate goals are to help Soca crossover to mainstream in anyway that he can and to become one of the top Soca DJ's in the world, and to be respected while doing it.Look out for DJ Stephen win more awards, promote Soca and the culture in powerful ways and come to an event near you and mash it up!-- Jason SkyWalker Caribbean Runnings from WRFG 89.3FM Changez Sound
