Dark Songs was written and recorded in the summer of '04 at War 'n' Oats South. Rich Zilg (Hope, Star and Browning, The Roadside Graves, War 'n' Oats North) recorded and mixed it, and he hasn't been able to smile since. It's an album about infidelity, death on the highway at the hands of a friend, umbrella factories, prison dreams, Thanksgiving, love and loss in the barrio, the Clockmaker and the Cook, big mice and little men, escaping, hiding, drying up, lying, pissing it all away on whim...and going home to tear it all down and build the dream back up again. There are waltzes and death-rattles, electric guitars, accordions, and a bazouki. The drums are loud, but the touch is soft. It's an album, a band, and a foothold.
