My mother Gladys Monroe and my father listed as Edward Mortenson, a baker residing in california (I never met him).My mother, had a history of mental instability, and was unable to cope with me so I was placed in a foster home with Albert and Ida Bolender until I was seven.In 1933 I went back to my mother, but only until 1934 when she was admitted to a rest home in Santa Monica, California. Then I went to stay with Grace McKee, a close friend of my mother.Grace spoiled me and always took me to see the new Jean Harlow movies when they came out. I became fixated on her!Grace soon married Ervin Goddard and I was put in an orphanage from September 1935 to June 1937. Then I went back to Grace and Ervin’s. briefly until he tried to rape me. It was then that I stayed with Ana Lower until she was too old to care for me. Being with Ana was the happiest time of my childhood. In September 1941 I was again with Grace and it was now that I met Jim Dougherty. Jim and I were married on 19th June 1942, just after my 16th birthday!A year later Jim joined the Merchant Marines and in 1944 he went overseas.I started work in a parachute factory and was photographed for some Army promotional material. By 1945 I was becoming known as the ‘MMMMMM Girl’ and had appeared on the cover of 33 national magazines!By now Jim and I had grown apart and had divorced in 1944.
