Alex Panayi comes from Nicosia Cyprus. From an early age he began his training in music and singing, and soon was the first French horn of the Cyprus Symphony orchestra and Cyprus Youth Orchestra. At the same time he made various TV and live performances as a singer and songwriter. In 1990 he received a Fulbright scholarship, and went to study music and vocal performance at the Berklee College of Music, in Boston Mass. He studied voice with Mili Bermejo (Latin), Luz Bermejo, Sharon Brown, Anne Peckham (classical/musical theatre) Bob Stoloff, Maggie Scott, April Arabian (jazz, free improvisation), Livingston Taylor (pop/folk). He graduated in 1993 (Bachelor of Music, Honors), receiving the school’s prestigious “Best Performer Award”. Whilst in the USA he was given the opportunity to work with artists such as Billy Joel, The Manhattan Transfer, Gary Burton, and The New York Voices, and toured the USA with his vocal group “The Vocal Summit” where he received the “Outstanding Musicianship Award” by the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) in San Antonio, Texas. He also performed at Gilbert and Sullivan productions at M.I.T., singing lead roles, and originated the role of “Romulus” at the world premiere of the opera “Fresh Faust” by Leroy Jenkins (Boston Centre for the Arts). He has starred in musical theatre performances in Athens (Kennikie in “Grease”, Moses in “Mala” and many more).He is an expert in vocal technique and vocal coaching, appearing often on greek TV to express his views, and also in directing musical performances, with collaborations in Greece, Cyprus, Malta, and the UK. His students are some of Greece’s biggest names (Anna Vissi, Peggy Zina, Kostas Martakis, Nino etc). He is vice director of the “Fame Studio” school of vocal arts of ANT1 TV, and has been nominated to teach in this years Greek version of Star Academy, “Fame Story”. He has also taught voice, backing-vocals, and choir at the Boston Conservatory, and other schools in the USA, Greece and Cyprus. He works, in the studio and live, as vocal coach, vocal arranger, vocal performer with top performers. Sakis Rouvas, Antonis Remos, Helena Paparizou, Despina Vandi, Anna Vissi are only a few in a long list of artists. Over the period of the last twelve years, he has vocal arranged and produced many gold albums, including the albums of “Fame Story” winners. He has permanent collaborations with SonyBMG, Universal, Warner, EMI and all other record companies in Greece, and with most arrangers and composers in the business.He is regional musical director for Disney Greece, and has directed, sung and acted in over forty Disney and Dreamworks movies (Tarzan, Mulan, Brother Bear, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, The Prince of Egypt, Ratatouille, Meet the Robinsons, Toy Story, etc).He represented Cyprus twice at the Eurovision Song Contest1995, 2000, and also Greece in 2005 with Helena Paparizou, winning the contest.Hi base is in Athens Greece, but his work makes him travel to many cities world wide such as Nicosia, Valetta, London, Paris, Sydney, New York and L.A.
