About Me

The short story //When I was young we listened to James Brown, and we listened to country, too. We had this old reel-to-reel full of 70's R&B, soul, and disco. These were my first memories of music as a youngster living on base in Germany. I remember sitting and listening through these magnificently large headphones. After moving back to the states there was classic country and whatever pop music that was available on Oklahoma radio. Music filled our house, but it came mainly from speakers which were certainly unbound by the prejudices of the rural Midwest. //My first grade music teacher sent me home with a note to my mother suggesting that she get me a piano, so she did. After a few years of piano lessons, I became disinterested. The first concert I recollect was Chuck Berry. I guess, you could say it was all over for me, a wirey third grader, after seeing Cheap Trick at the coliseum in Lawton, OK. //Later I took up saxophone and played for 5 teenage years until I realized chasing ladies and band practice didn't really jive. So I hocked my alto, bought my first acoustic guitar, and pocketed the remaining 75 bucks. //My grandfather was a vocalist out of Fort Worth in the mid-sixties who went by the name Charles Christy. Along with early greats such as Delbert McClinton, he was part of what was termed "The Fort Worth Sound." I will always be propelled and profoundly ingratiated by his unknown legend. //From 2003-2006 I formed and played with Austin-based band Love County. Regulars at the Saxon Pub and all over TX and OK, we have since embarked on our own projects. //In late 2007 a handful of common comrades, and most especially my closest confidante Angie West, convinced both George Reiff and I that a project needed to be realized between the two of us. Since then, my first solo project has been humbled and repeatedly elevated by an extraordinary range of collaborators who, through their current work with John Mayer, Son Volt, Spoon, Charlie Sexton, Ian Moore, Roky Erikson and many more, bring immeasurable talent and ideas to the breadth of these tunes. //The samples you hear today, recorded live at Premium Sound in Austin, TX, are un-mixed and fairly raw in their current state. The album has been recorded in its entirety, and the songs are enjoying various stages of creative finesse prior to mixing and mastering in December. //Upon album release in September 2009, the ensemble and I are looking forward to taking the show on the road... or to a theatre near you. We hope to see you there. //CB
