One of the Philadelphia area’s hardest working jazz and commercial drummers and world percussionists, 27-year-old Brian Menendez can be frequently seen fronting his own jazz groups with Philadelphia’s finest players at a long list of clubs and private engagements throughout the Delaware Valley. He is as easily seen as a supportive sideman at some of the areas most prestigious events, receptions, and musicals. A consummate musician with passion to spare, Brian’s goal to connect to the music, the musicians, and to the listener allows a diverse repertoire from jazz to blues to pop to R &B, a significant strength in catering the most appropriate sound to a particular context.
A former member of the prominent blues band The Dali Lamas in which he recorded two albums, Ice Cream Man and Smiling' In A Row (Whirled Around Records), Brian has shared the stage with artists including Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, John Farnsworth, Kenny Garrett, Bunky Green, Eddie Kirkland, Mulgrew Miller, and Maria Schneider and has performed as a regular member of the Phil Morrison Trio featuring Keith Williams, Keith Javors Quintet, Teddy Washington Sextet, First Coast Jazz Ensemble, the Retro Kats, and Bobby and the Blisters. Brian has performed on stages around the world ranging from Euro Disney to the House of Blues to Chris’ Jazz Café’ and World Café’ Live. His work as a sideman can be heard on the ArtistShare, Sea Breeze Vista, and Whirled Around Records labels. Brian holds an A.A. degree from Indian River College, attended the University of North Florida momentarily, and holds a B.M. degree in Instrumental Performance with high honors from the prestigious University of the Arts. Brian was the first drummer to receive the Peter Nero Jazz Award and was also named to the National Deans List. He has been the recipient of numerous other scholarships and awards. Brian is busy in the area as a teacher, performer, and a subcontractor.
