BIOGRAPHY
Primarily self-taught, Nicola began to play in the 1988. He has deepened his own formation during the years, learning a lot from his direct musical activity of practice, research and planning with other musicians, and both through jazz piano seminars (Marsala Jazz with S. Bonafede, S. Anna Arresi Jazz with U. Petrin, Ravenna Jazz with D. Rea - Doctor 3 - open lessons of piano trio), masterclasses (with William Parker, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Muhall R. Abrahams, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Marc Ribot) and workshops (with Tristan Honsinger, Edoardo Marraffa, Barre Phillips). He has composed and played for cinema and theater. Currently active within researching music and the avant-jazz area, he is a co-founder of the Comanda Barabba 5et, which has been active since 2000. In 2005 the quintet earned a mention as one of the best avant jazz bands by the national press classification, and he was recognised as being among the best composers. He coordinate the Open Session (open and free improvisation meeting) at the Popular School of Music "Ivan Illich", where he also cooperate, teaches piano and conduct laboratoires. He's a memeber of the Gnu Collective, which has been founded by improvisers and avant-jazz musicians actives in Bologna.

BIOGRAFIA
Inizia a suonare nel 1988 sviluppando poi un percorso musicale e formativo eterodosso. Ha approfondito la propria preparazione nel corso degli anni frequentando seminari pianistici (Marsala Jazz con S. Bonafede, S. Anna Arresi Jazz con U. Petrin, Ravenna Jazz con D. Rea - Doctor 3 piano trio), masterclass (con William Parker, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Muhall R. Abrahams, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Marc Ribot) e laboratori (Tristan Honsinger, Edoardo Marraffa, Barre Phillips), imparando molto dalla diretta attività musicale, di pratica, ricerca e progettazione insieme ad altri musicisti. Ha composto e suonato per cinema e teatro (premi: Prima Aziz, Interculture Map, Favolando). Attivo negli ambiti della musica di ricerca e dell'avant-jazz, riserva molte energie allo sviluppo di una voce strumentale personale, alla composizione e all'arrangiamento. E' cofondatore del quintetto Comanda Barabba, formato nel 2000. In seguito alla pubblicazione del concerto tenuto per la trasmissione "Battiti" (Rai Radio 3) il quintetto è stato indicato tra le migliori formazioni nel "top jazz" della stampa specializzata, e nel 2007 viene indicato tra i migliori compositori dalla rivista Musica Jazz. Coordina le Open Session (incontri di improvvisazione) presso la Scuola Popolare di Musica "Ivan Illich", dove insegna e collabora alle attività. Le Open Session hanno avuto inizio insieme al collettivo GNU, del quale è membro, costituito da musicisti attivi a Bologna nell'ambito del jazz d'avanguardia e della musica di ricerca.
