James L. Pulliam Jr. was born December 12, 1987 in Fayetteville, North Carolina to Terry Smith and James L. Pulliam Sr. Being the fact that his father was never around it was up to his mother Terry to raise him and his older sister by herself. He was a “Army Brat†so he had to move all around the United States with his mother and his sister, moving to places such as Washington State, Maryland, Philadelphia and so on. He has 1 older blood sister (Nakwona) and a play brother (A.J.)
When young James got into music he was about 9 years old living in Philadelphia with his grandmother when he got his first rap CD. It was 2Pac’s first double CD “All Eyez On Me†He played that CD everywhere he went. In the month of September of 1998 James got into a bad fight at school where he was jumped by some other kids and he was hit in the head by a steel chair. His mother pulled him out of the school and sent him down to the south to North Carolina to live with his Aunt and Uncle.
Growing up in the south was something he had to get back into getting use to. He was living with an abusive uncle and school wasn’t going good for him but he made the best of it. He still kept that 2Pac CD by his side. He made it to Statesville High School and things started going right for him getting good grades, making friends, sports, and also doing what he always had a love for which was writing lyrics and poetry. He was in a small group of lyricists they had at school called the Allstarz.
His sophomore year there was 7 people that he was pretty close to get killed in a car crash. It had everybody in the school mourning their death including James. Even though it was a tough time to get through but James fought through the hard time. His senior year came and James was on top of his game. Popularity, sports figure, Drama Club, but James decided he wanted to go in another direction with his career after school. Even though he wanted to go to College but he was always thinking about how he was going to pay for it. The phone rings one afternoon and it is a Army Recruiter.
James decided to go into the Army Reserve after graduating with honors from Statesville High School. 2 weeks after he graduated he was off to Basic Training and AIT. After his training he came back to Statesville and decided he was going to go to school in Decatur GA at Devry University with his play brother. He decides that he wants to take up Health Information Technology and Business Administration Entreprenuership. He met a couple of guys at his job at Applebee’s that he became real tight and now they go by the name of PCO (Paper Chasin’ Organization)
March 23, 2007 roughly around 7 p.m. James gets a phone call on his cell phone from his mother letting him know that his Grandmother passed away in the hospital. James was real emotional about the whole thing and almost lost his faith but he still kept on believing. “Everything happens for a reason and its up to you to decide if that reason is worth still keeping your faith or letting it go.†James said that he would dedicate all his accomplishments to her. He is doing more with the music idea now more than ever.
Now James is doing a tour in Iraq but that is not stopping his dreams. Most nights over there you can find him sitting in front of his laptop in his room typing up his lyrics and recording with a headphone set that he received in a care package. “Grinding isn’t free just like freedom it comes with a price and sacrifice you just have to do what you can when you are given an opportunity†Currently he has less than 60 days left in the desert until he can come back and start on the next chapter of his life so stay tuned to see what he does next.
