Sumako's ambient music
has an organic quality that is not commonly found in the contemporary music genre today.Sumako's studio set up is a simple one. Don't expect to see an array of synthesizers, keyboards, and drum machines. The main instrument that drives a complicated network of effects, samplers, and mixers is a custom built experimental guitar, built by Pete Skermette. Every sound for rhythms, beats, sonic sounding synths are all made with this guitar. It is also important to note that Sumako's effects are all analog based and that there is no midi involvement. While some may argue that all this detail in the process can be limiting and can be a moot point when all that seems important is the final product (the Music); to Sumako, process is everything. Process is what helps him gain that organic feel out of his music. Process is what gives him original and at times futuristic sounds. Process allows him to perform live. Process is a system and an order in which gives a certain level of consistency and opens up doorways to exciting challenges in the composition process.
Sumako believes that it is important for him to work in a system that forces him to know the capabilities of his guitar inside and out. Every recording process leads to a new discovery one that develops into a new composition. Most of the time he composes without a set idea in mind. It just comes out natural while making the instrument do something new.
Sumako’s latest compositional series focuses on using sound to create Abstract art. Working with “sub-woofer†frequencies, Sumako’s music set’s off a system designed with glass and lasers to create abstract pictures of light. This study focuses on creating new dimensions of “action†and “expressionism†in the same vain as Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Albert Kotin, but with a modern or futurist twist using specific frequencies and light instead of paint.
Currently Sumako performs in select venues specializing in avant-garde music in and around Long Beach, CA as well as sound art show installations. Sumako also scores music for independent film soundtracks.
