FOOD SECTION!!
FAVORITE RESTAURANTS:
Los Angeles, CA
Spago
The name may be cliche, but the food isn't. The foie gras sampler is a work of culinary art, and an ever-changing menu featuring such rustic fare as veal checks, roast chicken with black truffles and goulash proves that there is substance to the legend of Herr Puck. And the ambiance is more fun than off-putting, even though it's in Beverly Hills. A must at least once before you die.
Taquizas a Domicilio (aka The Truck)
Parked on Alvarado, north of Sunset near the Albertsons
The best tacos, burritos and quesadillas in LA, served from a trailor, from 7 pm to 2 am nightly. The meats are deep and hearty in flavor, and a range of choices from standard carne asada to more adventurous buche (stomach) and lengua (tongue) will make each visit an experience. The red salsa will kill your tongue but is worth the pain.
Oakland, CA
Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe
Shaken' Jesse-Guiness Stout, Chocolate Ice Cream and Espresso Milkshake...ya it's good. Awesome breakfasts (that's all I've had there), served in a funky neo-retro diner. Thanks for turning me on to this Mr. Hart!
Orvieto, Umbria, Italy
La Polomba
Best Italian food I've ever had, including an amazingly simple dish of toasted bread, black truffles and olive oil. Mains were more black truffles with handmade pasta, roasted rabbit and wild boar raggout. A perfect food-focused experience with spot-on service in a fortified hill-top Eutruscan town.
Portland, OR
L'Astra
22 NE 7th, 97214
(503) 236-3896
Wonderful French-influenced food served by Benjamin and Shannon in a charming guerilla-style kitchen/dining room, where mouth-watering smells combine with an eclectic music selection and reasonable prices. If you're in Portland, it's a must.
