DAN JOHANSSON BIO

Dan Johansson was born in Sala Västmanland, Sweden in 1965. In 1980, he began music courses at the Västerås Music Gymnasium where he studied and played with Esbjörn Svensson and Magnus Öström. After a year at Sjöviks Folkhögskola in Dalarna, he was admitted to the Music Conservatory in Örebro and studied with Ulf Adåker. Since1987, Dan has been based in Luleå, Sweden as a member and featured soloist of the Norrbotten Big Band under the artistic directorship of American trumpeter Tim Hagans. The NBB has made several critically acclaimed recordings and has appeared many times on television and radio. Dan is featured prominently on the band’s latest CD Worth The Wait with Peter Erskine. Recent guests have included Joe Lovano, Bob Berg, Toots Thielemans, Maria Schneider, Nils Landgren, Esbjörn Svensson, Chris Potter and Randy Brecker. Norrbotten Big Band is one of the leading jazz orchestras on the world scene having performed throughout Europe and America.

Mr. Johansson also performs regularly in small group constellations. His recording The Blue Precentor (Imogena, 2001) is an example of his impressive and wonderful melodic style. Musicians on the recording include Håkan Broström, Ion Baciu, Filip Augustsson, Bengt Stark, and Harri Ihanus. Dan’s group was invited two years in a row to perform at the Petrosavodsk International Jazz Festival in Russia. He has also performed with Bernt Rosengren, Claes Jansson, Krister Andersson, and Andreas Pettersson. His steady working group, consisting of Jerker Johansson, Tommy Lakso and Hans De Ward, can be heard on the 2006 release titled Jazz i Norra Hamn.

In addition to his full-time work with the Norrbotten Big Band, Dan has also appeared with the Magnus Lindgrens Radiojazzgrupp, Visby Storband, UMO Jazz Orchestra in Helsinki and Håkan Broströms Big Band.
