About Me
"Poetry is a song, written on an invisible score, set the music of our emotions against the backbeat of our soul...."Scarlette hails from Toledo, OH. __________________________________________A theater geek, starting as a chorus girl/dance extra in "Anything Goes" and workin her way up to "Benvolio" in a modern adaptation of "Romeo in Juliet" in 2004; "Genie of the Lamp" in a 2005 production of "Aladdin"; and a nightclub singer named Deloris in James White's "Son of a King" in 2008. _____________________________________Scarlette got her start at poetry as a young girl who read EVERYTHING; her favorite classes were English and History. At age 15, she attended a 5-day youth leadership conference that had a "Coffeehouse Open Mic Night" the last evening. She wrote a poem an hour before the show, receiving a standing ovation.__________________________
Since then, she has performed at open mic nights in several states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. (!!!BIG UPS TO CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS, nee *SEVEN STUDIOS, IN JACKSON, MS!!!!!) winning some competitions for $$, some for bragging rights, but always for the love of personal expression.
Scarlette's most recent endeavor is OutSpoken, Jackson State University's premiere poetry organization. Chartered June 14, 2007 by Scarlette, Diandgy Georges, and Jamaal Bolden, OutSpoken is a student organization dedicated to poetry, spoken-word performance, networking opportunities, and artistry. This group has had eight successful productions so far, including open forums on issues affecting the Black community, and plans on doing more to finance future community service projects. ***LATEST PROJECT!!***GREENVILLE SUMMER SOUL-STICE Open Mic Night June 2009!!!!!!!!**** Scarlette's work encompasses a vast array of topics, from love to childhood games to spirituality to pain, but are always delivered with a refreshing clarity and poignant honesty. The best piece of advice she's ever come across:_____________________________________________
"...Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful [people] with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.â€-Former President Calvin Coolidge
