Some background: I grew up in a town of 300 people, 250 of which were related to me in one way or another. There was no school once the fish-eyed brothers up the road burned it down, no public library, no cable TV and very little tolerance of anything that involved reading or writing. The road I lived on, which was actually within the city limits, wasn't paved until I was 11. The mayor for most of my childhood officially went by the name "Moose." I learned arcane skills like frog gigging, how to clean a catfish with just a nail and pliers, and how to drink an awful lot of Miller ponies. I bounced around as a reporter and photographer for a long time before finally deciding to get serious about writing. I sold my first short story within a month of this decision, and haven't looked back.
