About Me

Ian J. Baggette, originally from Tucson, AZ has been living in Dayton, OH since 1990. At a young age, Ian became interested in orchestral music on the viola. All the while growing up with Sergeant Pepper, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire, it wasn't until high school that he was introduced to the bass and discovered a new approach to music. At the age of 16 Baggette became involved with an original rock band and collaborated on different projects in and out of school. He quickly found a new home on stage in the underground scene of Dayton where Manifest won its first battle of the bands. While in high school Ian joined the award winning Stivers Jazz Ensemble and discovered a love of improvised music. He also became a member of the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. In 2002 Baggette was awarded a scholarship to Miami University to study classical music. While there he took part in the symphony, wind ensemble, chamber groups, big band and just about any ensemble he could find. However, not feeling comfortable unless occupied with many things, Ian also led or became a member of various jazz, salsa, world, neo-soul and hip-hop groups throughout his time spent at Miami. In 2006 he decided to study abroad at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa in the centre for jazz and popular music under Darius Brubeck. During his stay he worked with local and international acts such as The South African Jazz Orchestra featuring Abdullah Ibrahim and the KZN Philharmonic as well as performing in pit orchestras for theatrical productions and various other ensembles in Cape Town and Johannesburg. After returning from Africa, Ian returned to Miami to complete his Bachelors degree. In 2008 he was selected to take part in the summer institute at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass directed by Christian McBride and Loren Schoenberg. Since his the fall of 2000 Ian has recorded with, or opened for artists such as: Abdullah Ibrahim, Mulgrew Miller, Steve Wilson, Dan Faehnle, Phil DeGreg, Darius Brubeck, Melvin Peters, Sundar Viswanathan, The Roots, Snoop Dogg, Sean Paul, George Benson, Grupo Niche, Sonora Carruseles, and Puerto Rican Power.
