I am here for Friends

About Me

I was born Dorothy Faye Dunaway on January 14, 1941 in Bascon, Florida. My father, John was soldier in the United States army and therefore I moved more times with my family following he in its allocation. When a child, I have attended the schools in Texas, Arkansas, Utah and also in Germany, for to enter then to the University of Florida, where I have obtained a scholarship for the dramatic arts. After to have attended the University of the Fine Arts of Boston where I have studied acting, then I have moved myself to New York for enter to make part of the theatrical company "Lincoln Center Repertory". Here I knew the great director Elia Kazan and I became its student; I made my Broadway debut in the production of "A Man for All Seasons", in billboard from 1961 to 1963, as substitute of the actress that interpreted the daughter of Tommaso Moro. After some performances in Broadway, the role of leading actress in the theatrical production 'off-Broadway' "Hogan' s Goat" has opened to me the road for the first cinematographic interpretation: in 1967 I have had a little role in Otto Preminger's "Hurry Sundown" starring Michael Caine and Jane Fonda. In the same year I came engaged by Elliot Silverstein for the movie "The Happening", where I worked with Anthony Quinn. It was with the following movie Arthur Penn's "Bonnie & Clyde" that I obtained the popularity. For this wonderful movie in which I recited with Warren Beatty and Gene Hackman, I received an Academy Award nomination as better leading actress. My glamour a bit haughty and my talent made me to become very soon one of the more celebreted actress of years sixty and seventy, engaged to the rhythm of two or more film to year with the others stars of the so-called "New Hollywood". In 1968 they followed others two successful movies: Norman Jewison's "The Thomas Crown Affair" with charming Steve McQueen and in Italy Vittorio De Sica's "A Place for Lovers" with handsome Marcello Mastroianni with which I had a tormented history of love also in the real life. In 1969 I have participated to John Frankenheimer's comedy "The Extraordinary Seaman" with David Niven and Elia Kazan's drama "The Arrangement" with Kirk Douglas. In 1970 I have had the leading role in the movie "Puzzle of a Downfall Child" directed by Jerry Schatzberg that in that period was my boy-friend. In the same year I was in Arthur Penn's western "Little Big Man" starring Dustin Hoffman. In 1971 I recited in France in René Clair's thriller "The Deadly Trap" and in Frank Perry's western "Doc" with Stacy Keach and Harris Yulin. In 1973 they followed another western: Stanley Kramer's "Oklahoma Crude" with George C. Scott and Richard Lester's "The Three Musketeers" where I have worked with great actors such Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch, Charlton Heston, Michael York and Richard Chamberlain. I have played the part of evil Milady de Winter and I have then retaken the same role in the continuation "The Four Musketeers". In 1974 they followed classic Roman Polanski's noir "Chinatown" with Jack Nicholson for which I have had my second Academy Award nomination as best actress and Irwin Allen's "The Towering Inferno" with Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. In 1975 I parteciped to Sidney Pollack classic thriller "Three Days of the Condor" with Robert Redford and the subsequent year Sidney Lumet's "Network" where I have worked with great performers such William Holden, Robert Duvall and Peter Finch, for my performance as Diana Christensen I have gained the Oscar as better actress.Others my movies in those yeras are "Voyage of the Damned", the thriller "Eyes of Laura Mars" with Tommy Lee Jones, Franco Zeffirelli's "The Champ" with Jon Voight and "The First Deadly Sin" with Frank Sinatra. In those years was ollowed rumors about mine love-storys with men of the show-buisness such Jack Nicholson, Lennie Bruce, Harris Yulin, Robert Redford....but I knew also the musician Peter Woolf of the J. Geils Band that became my husband from 1974 to 1979. In 1981 I was engaged by director Frank Perry for play the legendary Hollywood star Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest"; I had good reviews in Europe for my performance but the movie was demolished from the critic in United States and my acting was judged too much melodramatically over-the-top and truly camp....this movie ruined literally my career and my credibility of refined and sensitive dramatic performer. For escape from the ostracism of Hollywood I had to be moved in England, where I knew famous photographer Terry O' Neill who became my second husband: We were married from 1983 to 1987. In those years I participated especially to English productions such "The Wicked Lady", "Ordeal by Innocence" with Donald Sutherland and Christopher Plummer and I was engaged for the role of villain in Salkind's "Supergirl The Movie" starring Peter O'Toole and Mia Farrow; I play the wicked witch Selena opposite Helen Slater as Supergirl. In years eighty I slowed down the cinematographic activity and I dedicated myself especially to television productions. Then I returned to cinema with movies such "Barfly" with Mickey Rourke, "Burning Secret" and "The Handmaid's Tale".In 90s they followed Emir Kusturica's "Arizona Dream" with Johnny Depp and Jerry Lewis, "Don Juan DeMarco" still with Johnny Depp and great Marlon Brando, Kevin Spacey's "Albino Alligator", "The Chamber" with Gene Hackman and Chris O'Donnell, the remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair" starring Pierce Brosnan and René Russo and Luc Besson's "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" with Milla Jovovich, John Malkovich and Dustin Hoffman.I have participated to beyond 80 films, I have received more important prizes that an actress can receive but in spite of this Hollywood all of a sudden has turned me the shoulders. This because I have a hard temper, are known In Hollywood my struggles with such directors as Otto Preminger and Roman Polanski but I Think that my reputation of being a 'difficult' person is totally not justified: I take my profession very seriously and I protest against the fact that the perfectionism in Hollywood is usually taken as praiseworthy in men and, unfairly condemned in women...
